I see your Lee Greenwood and raise you a Woody Guthrie.
Rewatching The Wolf of Wall Street and way too much of it reminds me of how the Pentagon is currently being run.
I get yelled at for saying this but for many hundreds of years people went to university not to get diplomas or be employable but because immersion in the humanities was considered foundational to a good life, and school must return to its original purpose: the joy of learning.
The overuse of truffle oil.
Try to imagine J. Edgar Hoover doing this.
I have a deep fondness for the sounds of pages turning and music stands creaking (squeaking?) throughout “Waltz from Nine” on the Nine OCR
Gavin Newsom is a very slick salesman whose ultimate product is himself. He believes in power and maintaining the status quo. He is in no way the future of the democrats or the left.
If it looks like a Nazi and quacks like a Nazi…
Wow.

First response to the show from a friend was “shows in that era loved some bongos didn’t they”
Merry Stritchmas!
Delia, Kate McAllister, Moira Rose, and so many others. Respect.
As an elder millennial, I’m going to put this in West Wing terms. Imagine Nancy McNally claiming she ordered the siege of, say, Minneapolis at the behest of Josh Lyman.
Also- “I was only following orders” feels like it’s been tried and failed before. Hmm. Where was that again?
1. Don't snitch-tag.
2. Don't explain to people what they just said.
3. Don't "correct" people's jokes.
4. Don't respond seriously to silly little posts.
5. Don't respond trivially to obviously serious posts.
6. Don't "jocularly insult" people you don't know.
The rest is commentary.
And now The Partner and I are figuring out what the MTM episode would be. So far we’ve got Lou sending Mary to cover protests and Mary getting involved.
There’s that pesky goalpost being moved from deporting undocumented people with criminal records to denaturalizing citizens.
1: Give them a follow.
2: I’ve seen the Griffith films on the 1001 list
Birth of a Nation- anti-Black
Intolerance- anti-Catholic, Jewish, feminist, immigrant
Broken Blossoms- anti-Asian
Way Down East- sex bad!
Orphans of the Storm- liberals bad, aristocracy good
Do yourself a favor. Skip DW.
These people have the worst cases of Stockholm Syndrome! The answer to this should be, "You're a public servant. I expect you to answer my question civilly and without insults. If you can't, find me someone who can." What would happen? He'd get barred from these sham events? And lose what, exactly?
Mike Johnson hasn’t heard anything about that.
There is a grave moral consequence to letting this go on. Shut down the government, have a general strike, grind the country to a halt, hit the streets. But not treating a demented administration lying about its thugs committing cold-blooded murder as an emergency? That is an emergency in itself.
A classic for a reason

actual bluesky challenge: post your favorite work of art from fifty years before you were born.

1: yes it is.
2: this AI poster is NOT IT. Catwoman’s neck? A penguin bound in rope? The frightening combination of Michelle Pheiffer and Uma Thurman? Come on folks. Let’s use real artists work. There’s plenty.
It’s officially the holiday season in my house. The Mister and I have had our annual rewatch of my lifelong fave All I Want for Christmas starring my OG Christmas crush @ethanembry.bsky.social
I’m pretty sure Bacall’s performance is what fist inspired my dry wit at an early age.
I’m reminded of Quentin Tarantino’s Broadway debut in the revival of Wait Until Dark. As word of mouth spread about Tarantino’s acting abilities, Ben Brantley wrote “reports of his inadequacies have not been exaggerated.”
I was working on Hadestown. Leopoldstadt was teching across the street. I saw Stoppard at the coffee shop a few times and one day said hello. He said “hi, I’m Tom” and we had a nice chat about plays, mostly Arcadia, which I had worked on. We then said hello every day. I will relish that forever.
