What depresses me is that it's practically impossible to even explain to the average American what the specific crime is here, because it's just treated as one of the perks of the job.

I mean it reminds me a lot of how people have come to view politics as similar to professional wrestling - everything is staged and all the outcomes are pre-planned. From that perspective, each "crisis" is no different than having some scripted and rehearsed stunt in the middle of a fight.
