In life, those who share in your tallest mountain tops and lowest valleys are those whom we call friends. Living those experiences are sure to sort out your friends for you. Publishing a book and a family member’s death are two of those things. Let me tell you what a month it has been.

This Is What Mourning a Place Looks Like Michelle Wahila reflects on returning to upstate New York from France—grappling with grief, gratitude, and belonging in the place she once called home.

@ruffledbygrace.bsky.social: Grief has a way of both stretching and sustaining gratitude. I have deep gratitude for the foundation you helped me build—my education, friendships and traditions. But I am stretched by the rift between who you were and who you have become.

Well, our family wasn’t raptured. It’s after 7:00 AM and it’s time to start our very normal day. Metro. Boulot. Dodo.

An eternal goodbye - infinitely difficult. But now we are home. And we will learn to navigate this world without Dad. I’m not sure how yet, but he loved us so well, so I am confident we will figure it out.

Dad is home. Hospice came in and prepared everything (as they do!). I am such a believer in the work of hospice and have had incredibly positive experiences in the past. Grateful my Dad will be comfortable at home now.

I am so sorry. Sending light and breath, and my shortened version of my favorite Thich Naht Hanh meditation:

In, out
Deep, slow
Calm, ease
Present moment.

Thank you so much 🩷. You have been such a graceful presence to me through this journey.

Sharing this because while I try to live pretty transparently on social media, it’s been hard to share my Dad’s sickness. I was a fool for having my heart tugged. Sadly, that’s both a lesson and a warning. And also why I have been so quiet. Friends, pray for my family.

Long story short, work was never done. No response to my refund requests and finally just no response. My father was placed on hospice this week and that $ could have been a flight home. Angry doesn’t even cover it.

I was taken in by a sad story and request from a Twitter mutual for extra work to earn money because their father was unwell. My father was unwell at the time and I had work to be done.

Book review: Finding grace in unexpected places
Reviewed in the United States on July 15, 2025
Format: Paperback
If you’re searching for blessings and spiritual insights rooted in vulnerability and shared humanity, “Ruffled by Grace” delivers. It reads like a series of intimate conversations. Pastors in particular will resonate with the struggle of both loving the church, and nearly being destroyed by the demands of “executive Jesus.” But really anyone who has found themselves in the midst of a situation that is crushing their soul, will find both solace and refreshment in how grace shows up in the most unexpected people and places. And that one can flourish outside the bounds of “typical” ministry. Each chapter is followed by a devotional blessing for your own daily use.
