Understanding dementia means looking past what seems outwardly intact to see the hidden struggles—and the profound impact on everyone involved.

Dementia affects far more than memory. Language skills, problem-solving abilities, & attention all erode over time, though not always in predictable ways. Some abilities—like social interactions or long-practiced routines which can create a deceptive impression of stability.

I can still vividly recall them recounting a story from childhood in remarkable detail, moments that left us breathless with hope and bittersweet wonder.

Both my mother and grandmother lived with dementia for several years, and I witnessed firsthand the phenomenon often referred to as “lucid intervals.” During these moments, their thoughts and behaviors seemed to regain a fleeting clarity, a glimpse of who they once were.

Dementia is a deeply complex and multifaceted condition, affecting every aspect of cognitive ability and mental function. Its progression and manifestations differ widely from one individual to another, making it an immense challenge to fully understand or manage.

🙏🏽 People on the outside looking in of a #Caregiver of someone with #alzhiemers #dementia need to understand that being #incapacitated can mean many things and has several levels. Things are not always what they seem.
