Just spent an inordinately long time today digging into the 1973 BBC Wales regional kids entertainment programme [in Welsh] that the 2 Daleks were recorded for and ended up lost on their return to London [sic Blue Peter].
A trawl through BBC Genome indicates when the possible broadcast date was.
I'm fairly sure the filming with Hartnell had begun before Gerry did his rewrite.
Which doesn't prove or disprove either.

I think the 9.4 mil for an episode of Toymaker is fairly significant as well. Maybe they should have brought him back every third story.
The Tenth Planet does raise the regular figures back to over 7 million though. for the first time since Toymaker. Cyberman and Dalek stories back to back helped.
Pity his anecdote doesn't quite match up with the facts though.
The lowest rating the back end of Hartnell got was 4.2mil for the third episode of The Smugglers.
