As uncomfortable as it can be, discussing taste is really important for game design stuff. Sometimes design discussions try to tiptoe around the topic of tastes cuz "I think you have bad tastes" comes off as elitist & is hard to justify "objectively".

Yesterday marked 36 years since the debut of Galaxian 3: Project Dragoon at Expo '90. A hydraulically-powered amusement ride seating 28 players, it is one of the most influential video games of the 1990s and without question the most important game you cannot play.

I don't dislike the remake but you are 100% right on why it's worse. I've often said the original is like clockwork, all the parts of the combat slot together amazingly to make it a game about very limited movement and crowd control, and the remake just loses that in the translation

People who talk about game design and view games as art should make more analogies to other artforms & see if it sounds right in that context. A lot of conventional "design wisdom" sounds like absolutely bonkers corporate unofficial marketing wing nonsense when you apply it to any other medium
