society focuses so much on qualifications and certification and we use terms like "vibes based" to diminish the value of creative problem solving and gatekeep people away from things. but if you manage to figure out how to do something on your own... you're better equipped to solve new problems

unintuitive perspective I've developed. if you fake it till you make it and you actually get to the point of making it? that's problem solving. nobody handed you a permission slip to do the thing but you figured it out. you made it work. you're smart. you're a learner. you're adaptable.

slivers map too perfectly onto sludges

to be honest though CoQ deserves a set with actual mechanics because it'd be hilarious to model some of the simulative interactions in MtG

Quest systems are a massive red flag for this in my experience. They tend to balloon as people want to make cool fancy reactive quests and then hey weird why does making a simple kill/turn in quest take a week?

when you are making a tool, workflow or pipeline, making it really really easy to do the right thing is roughly 10000x more important than making it possible to do complex things. Always fight to keep it easy to do the right thing as people ask for features to do more things

compostable lol my phone refuses to type composable

It’s hard to do right and really easy to do wrong in my experience. But yeah buffs are the shit and more so than buffs wrapping up chunks of functionality into spell effects and making them compostable is the real shit. that was a big chunk of my GDC talk lol

Publishers’ AI battle hits Internet Archive SF organization losing access to some news content

“We are collateral damage.” - Mark Graham, Wayback Machine

When preservation is caught in the crossfire, it’s not just libraries that lose—it’s the public’s access to history, knowledge, and truth.

The web shouldn’t disappear behind closed doors.

Someone on X asks what the writing on these beautiful Shinto toriii gates means. A Japanese user, unwilling to kill the magic and inform them these are the names of individual & corporate shrine donors, replies, "There are things best left unknown."

Most games are dogs. They aim to please, even when challenging you, they are ultimately an encouraging friend.

Imsims are cats. They might be friendly, cute and enjoyable, but they are there doing their own thing, and interactions may lead to unforeseen outcomes.

I’m more of a cat person.

Everything Tatsuki Fujimoto, chainsaw man of course the first pull but Look Back really resonated with how I feel about working in a creative industry and is pretty unforgettable. And it’s under an hour

Okay let’s do a distraction for both you and me. I love anime and I truly believe there is an anime for everyone. If you haven’t been able to get into anime, tell me a little bit about the books and movies and tv you like, and I’ll recommend you an anime. Interaction settings open.
