Just. Tax. Them.
for sure, congratulations to magyar. but the real heroes imo are those in civil society & journalism & rank-and-file opposition & academia who have fought against the disintegration of rule of law, the weaponization of the courts/media, & so much more for so long. 🇭🇺
Look at the women at NASA.
They are the ones pushing the boundaries of science, solving problems most people can’t even understand, and carrying this country forward, while our politicians right now posture and stumble through talking points.
And they are doing it all with joy.👇
Thanks for joining for the book event and I’m so glad you two ended up having such a fun day!
Do Brits really pronounce “Irene” I-ree-knee?
I’m so over this timeline.
Someone please explain to me why FIFA hasn’t just shifted games out of the US and solely into Canada and Mexico. Is there some clause in the games agreement that prevents this or are they just being lazy?
On this day in 1963, segregationist Bull Connor refused to leave office after losing the mayoral election in Birmingham, Alabama. He then ordered the violent suppression of peaceful civil rights protests taking place in the city.
this is literally the least important thing to say here, but do y’all think anyone will clue him in on his approval ratings?
Pennsylvania was one of 2 states, alongside Louisiana, to mandate a sentence of life without parole for all 2nd-degree murder convictions.
That undifferentiated, automatic resort to such a harsh sentence ballooned PA prisons.
Pennsylvania's supreme court just said it was cruel & unconstitutional.
Questions to Sauer: What the fuck are you talking about man?
Questions to Wang: Hmm... interesting. Have you thought about this though?
Transnational adoptees who are also transracial adoptees are so aware of the ways we, as naturalized citizens, are in unique danger in this moment. While we are much safer than undocumented folks, our status is incredibly precarious under this regime ruled by white supremacy.
Everyone needs to just keep repeating this, over and over.
The politics of a case is NOT JUST ABOUT THAT CASE. There is a meta-game here too.
This case is surely going to be used as cover for gutting the VRA. And too many pundits are going to fall for it.
Kav... if we agree with you, it could be a short ruling. "Respondents have the better of Wong Kim Ark. Government does not ask us to overturn. Affirmed."
Wang says "yes." Everyone laughs.
But... YES... IT REALLY SHOULD BE THAT EASY!
Kavanaugh: could we write a very short opinion that just says "sorry it's birthright citizenship, good idea."
Wang: Yes
Kavanaugh: Do we have to address the constitutional issue?
Wang: You don't have to but it would be prudent to do so.
Wang now going through citation after citation post-Wong Kim Ark from the late 19th and early 20th centuries which confirmed that the government's position in this case is wrong. She gets almost a full minute or two to list these statements off, kind of emphasizing how little pushback she's getting.
Yes. And we’re living in it.
ACLU's Cecilia Wang, who is arguing in the Supreme Court against Trump's executive order to end birthright citizenship, is the daughter of Taiwanese immigrants. Norman Wong, the great-grandson of Wong Kim Ark, is outside the court. Ancestors are watching.
This. The court may even pair the release of the ruling in favor of birthright citizenship with the one gutting the Voting Rights Act, and the usual suspects will proclaim it’s a sign of moderation
The last five minutes has just been KBJ dunking on Sauer on this domicile point.
The reason she's doing this, I think, is just to highlight how unworkable Sauer's new rule would be.
She's talking about how it works, in the delivery room. "Are we bringing pregnant women in for depositions?"
ACB now brings up "foundlings"
...
...
This is the way.
[sorry, literally couldn't help myself.]
Don't get me wrong: I'm relieved that this case is shaping up as either 8-1 or 7-2 against the Trump executive order. But the case is a gift to the Supreme Court. By rejecting an outlandish position, it will earn credibility as apolitical, even as the Overton window moves far to the right.
Roberts: "It's a new world, it's the same constitution." That's John Roberts OFF the crazy train.
Really want this to be a sign that SCOTUS won’t overturn Wong Kim Ark but I also know better than to get my hopes up.
Same. And apparently also sad and terrified.
I don’t know how to get work done this morning knowing the birthright citizenship oral arguments are starting soon.
I can’t decide if that makes this timeline even worse or a tiny bit easier to live in.
Wait. This story is real???
