Eight water suppliers have issued 'do-not-use' or 'do-not-drink' water advisories in L.A. County. In these areas, there are concerns that the water might be contaminated by toxins from the fires. @jmarantosplants.bsky.social www.latimes.com/lifestyle/st...
“DO NOT DRINK THE TAP WATER”. This was the warning issued to Pacific Palisades residents last week as wildfires raged. Similar warnings were issued to some residents in Altadena and Pasadena. Wildfires can affect water quality while they burn––and for days, months, even years after they’re extinguished.
This isn’t the only time that wildfires have threatened clean water. Past examples include: Santa Rosa, California - 2017 Tubbs Fire Paradise, California - 2018 Camp Fire Hot Sulfur Springs - 2020 East Troublesome Fire Las Vegas, New Mexico - 2022 Calf Canyon/Hermits Peak Fire Lāhainā, Hawaii, 2023 Maui Fires Visual design: text on solid background, possibly photos from the above fires if they can be sourced
This kind of unnatural disaster is becoming more common, as fossil fuel pollution drives drier and hotter conditions in the West.
🔥 Megafires are more than a fire crisis—they can also trigger a water crisis.
A hotter, drier climate means fires burn larger, polluting drinking water supplies. Communities across the West have faced this firsthand. Swipe to learn more about the #LAFires from the #WECRCaucus➡️
after Maine found that fertilizer used on farms was contaminating milk, meat, crops, and water with forever chemicals, the state stepped up to take action. will other states follow their lead to protect the public? my latest for @newrepublic.com - newrepublic.com/article/1871...
Nearly 70 petrochemical companies across the nation, including 30 in Texas, are sending millions of pounds of pollutants into waterways each year due to weak or nonexistent regulations. www.ehn.org/petrochemica...
Infographic: New EPA report finds 19.2 million households in the U.S. face unaffordable water bills.
Infographic: 1 in 7 people in the U.S. pay more than 3% of their income toward their water and wastewater bills.
Infographic: The EPA reports says the U.S. needs $8.8 billion per year to provide enough assistance to help low-income families struggling to pay their water bills each month.
Quote graphic featuring Monica Lewis-Patrick, CEO of We the People of Detroit: "We hope the EPA water affordability report spurs action, both in establishing a permanent water bill assistance program to help families in need, but also as a call to action to support water systems with the technical assistance and funding necessary to ensure the increasing costs of delivering safe, reliable water aren't pushed onto people already struggling to pay their water bills."
💰Let’s close the water affordability gap: per a new EPA report, the U.S. needs to invest $8.8 billion a year for families to have permanent relief from high water costs. We can solve the water crisis together!

🤦🏻♀️ There is a list feature! Have been a little slow and lazy on exploration. Problem solved!
What a flex, Gabbi! Slowly working my way through the Foundryside trilogy - was a few chapters into Locklands but taking a break for short stories cause my brain is mush. The Tainted Cup is on the list for 2025. Sounds like you recommend!?
I want to fully leave the other place but it’s still the easiest spot to follow the chatter around my sports team. Lots of folks jumping here and starter packs are great but… I need lists, please!
Lots of water tidbits in here but this takes the cake:
During weather emergencies, the homes have structural limitations. During hurricanes, the National Weather Service has said, 72% of deaths occur in homes, and of those, 54% occur in mobile homes.

Today's Senate hearing celebrated the 50th anniversary of the #SafeDrinkingWaterAct— a transformative moment for water and health in the U.S. As water warrior and former EPA Assistant Administrator, Radhika Fox shared, this law "saved lives and created jobs." 🛠️💧 #SDWA50
This trend is worrying (to say the least). I got lots of opinions and ideas but truly not sure where we go as a society the decline in capital J Journalism and a rise in punditry and the thoughts of “people on the internet” filling the void.

Asheville, a city of 95,000 people, has been without drinkable water for 53 days after getting hit by a hurricane. It's finally back wlos.com/news/local/b...
Nice to “meet” you, Alex! The Water Hub team does a bunch of work with partners in the Gulf so around to be a resource if you’re looking for sources and stories! Will add you to our Louisiana list 👋😃
Come on in, east coast, the water’s fine, if a little lacking! I jest but in all seriously the fact that nearly every U.S. state is facing some level of drought is terrifying. Wacky weather whiplash makes a lot of people’s jobs more difficult at scale.

Wait what are the starter packs and where are the ones for U.S. water news junkies and environmental communicators? Still trying to find my peeps here.
One thing Alex Hager’s timely, smart article on the election impact on the future of #CORiver negotiations doesn’t get into is how $$ has greased the wheels for additional voluntary cuts to water use. Will the flow of dollars dry up under a 2nd Trump admin?
