They were also influenced by people who were looking to make a buck – a lot of bucks, in fact. They were young – in their early 60's – desperate to live, and this made them vulnerable. They were presented magical "cures," only success, no side effects, and I can see why they took them.
I wish the medical system, instead of seeing them as non-compliant, difficult patients, had an evidence-based intervention protocol.
This might have made no difference. And at the end of the day, they had free will. It is everyone's right to evaluate and choose the medical care they receive.
I don't question whether I could have done more, said more, pleaded more, begged more, cajoled more, yelled more, cried more, researched more, manipulated more, asked for more help from medical professionals. I tried every trick, and every skill I had for my mum. And for my dad, I was just a child.
Both my parents declined medical care in favour of untested, "alternative" cancer therapies. They both died.
To this day, the hardest thing for me to carry around is their regret. At the end of both their lives, they looked around and had the sickening realization they'd made the wrong choices.
Boring News now has a survey on its Manitoba pages, asking local readers whether they find the site useful and have any commentary to share.

I'm glad to see Avery Haines and W5 recognized for 'Sleeping with the Enemy.' Is an absolutely bone chilling and horrific watch, and one I'd recommend very highly.

Definitely not the standard I'd want to adhere to 😅
Also, there's no paywall on this story!
Boring News is generating content about cities, towns and First Nations all around Canada, so this is a story of national significance – but whether it's Boring News or another company, this practice is one are going to continue to contend with.
NEW: We caught a site run by a buzzy PR firm ripping off local and national journalism at an almost incomprehensible scale -- it's like a fully automatic machine gun spraying bullets of pure plagiarism directly into the internet

It's almost the weekend, which means it's time to read this can't-look-away, bonkers story about a Winnipeg business, known for coupon aggregation, that has churned out tens of thousands of AI-generated stories in recent months.

A little bit of the story behind the story:
"In the lead-up to that hearing, Forester cross-examined a CSIS official, challenging the government’s claim that releasing the 50-year-old RCMP records would pose a risk to national security today."

"For some Indigenous leaders, the era left a persistent legacy of paranoia. It manifests in suspicion. Wariness of new people. A check under the bed when travelling."

Proud of our paper and my colleagues 🥹
More incredible reporting from @jeffkhamilton.bsky.social as part of the Classroom Confidential series:
“The school has a duty of care for the children when the parents aren’t there,” the mother said. “Everything they did was wrong. There’s no other way to say it.”
You too! I wish the breaking news award had all your names listed!!
A big congrats to my colleagues @benwaldman.bsky.social, @niigaanwewidam.bsky.social, + the team who covered the tragedy in Hollow Water (@scottbilleck.bsky.social, Chris Kitching, @nicbufflin.bsky.social, @pritchatlarge.bsky.social, Erik Pindera, and @fpcarolsanders.bsky.social) on their noms.
Thank you! 🙏
And the second, about the death of Conor Rae, an 18-year-old who was shot and killed by an RCMP officer in Portage la Prairie in May 2023, in an encounter that has left many still unanswered questions for his friends and family.

Proud this morning to see two of my stories from last year recognized with National Newspaper Award nominations.
The first, about the second-generation cut-off, which has been referred to as a genocide “in paper form” for First Nations people.

Awwwww!!! You are making me smile! Thank you so much!!!
“The incident has brought long-standing concerns to a head,” Eric Robinson said.

The Tumbler Ridge newspaper puts it better than I could
(*Typo in that first post. It's 28 weeks, not months).
I think all workplaces need to implement what Ms. Iorio told the Globe about: "four paid weeks a year to employees caring for a family member with a serious health condition." That would make a world of difference for caregivers, especially as caregiving already comes with a load of new expenses.
But my leave was, of course, all unpaid. I received about four months of EI – a portion of my salary – but I needed financial support from my family to be away from a pay check for 10 long months. Had I not been on unpaid leave, I would have received four paid days to attend my mum's funeral.
This is a great read. I have a lot of gratitude for my employer for letting me take 10 months off to care for my mum as she died of cancer (and two more after her death) – longer than the 28 weeks months allowed by Manitoba's compassionate care leave.
