Chart showing the drop in the share of 12th graders who say they want to get married reflects shifting views among girls. Boys are more likely than girls to say they want to get married someday (74% vs. 61%), but this wasn’t always the case. In 1993, a larger share of girls (83%) than boys (76%) said they wanted to get married.

The share of boys saying this is virtually unchanged over the 30-year period. But the share among girls dropped by 22 percentage points.

Chart: America is still building fewer homes than it was before 2008 Total housing units built per 100,000 people per year [The line never returns to the historical average pre-2008]

“The core of the problem is simple: Too much money chasing too few homes.

In 2025, America built fewer homes per 100,000 people than it did in 2005, 1995, 1985 or 1975. If you wanted to encapsulate the entire problem in a single chart, here it is:

Yesterday my partner and I counted all the ads along Chicago's Brown Line for "Friend," a company selling an AI chatbot pendant, and tallied how many of those ads were defaced.

Still working on a longer piece on this, but here's the quick and dirty: we counted 104 "Friend" ads total, 42 defaced.

He has his eyes on all his company; he is tender towards the bashful, gentle towards the distant, and merciful towards the absurd; he can recollect to whom he is speaking; he guards against unseasonable allusions, or topics which may irritate; he is seldom prominent in conversation, and never wearisome.

He makes light of favours while he does them, and seems to be receiving when he is conferring. He never speaks of himself except when compelled, never defends himself by a mere retort, he has no ears for slander or gossip, is scrupulous in imputing motives to those who interfere with him, and interprets everything for the best.

He is never mean or little in his disputes, never takes unfair advantage, never mistakes personalities or sharp sayings for arguments, or insinuates evil which he dare not say out. From a long-sighted prudence, he observes the maxim of the ancient sage, that we should ever conduct ourselves towards our enemy as if he were one day to be our friend.

This reminds me of Cardinal John Henry Newman's book Definition of a Gentleman. I often cite Newman's book because it's so instructive. The term gentleman is so overwrought and frequently abused, but to the degree it means anything at all, I think Newman captures it here:

Someone is going to have the write the thing about how “vibe” has become a substitute for meaningful theory in a world where the theory is so clear — grift and power — but we collectively refuse if because it isn’t sophisticated enough to generate make work for empiricists.

I think that one of the things going on here is that a lot of powerful media figures think the admin, Rufo, Bannon etc share the same kind of low-intensity racist views they do ("affirmative action has gone too far") and can't recognize them as the full-blown fascist fantasists they are

8 months ago 1215 238 25 15

i will never not be amused by how the conservative world is governed by the kind of “affirmative action” they say happens in mainstream institutions. totally unqualified dipshits are handed the keys to institutions because they say the right thing and have the right look.

After losing his collision repair business in the recession of 2008, Andy took on various odd jobs, but still found himself $200 short of his monthly bills. To make ends meet, he resorted to an old hobby: drawing sexy cartoon characters. "I was a crappy artist, but one thing you can do to bypass that is to draw things naked," he tells us. Andy realized he could pump out these naked cartoon drawings quickly, then sell them for $5 to $10 each on eBay. In 2009, his big break came: after posting a

this is right, I feel like. Fascism is a terrorizing philosophy; to concede it anything -- success, competence, a future -- is to not just surrender to it but to serve its purpose.

the only thing i'd add to this is that mainstream political media is very much taken with the idea that trump is some incarnation of the national spirit. it shows up everywhere and is used to explain his political success.

Why push for impeachment?

Because politics is an exercise in moving public opinion as much as counting votes in the senate.

The Jan 6 Hearings were not a criminal proceeding against Trump that would end in jail, but they focused public attention.

Performative public investigations matter
