Marie Curie is a scientific icon and #trailblazer who broke the #barriers so that other scientists can stand. Her contributions and story remind us that #innovation thrives when every brilliant mind has a seat at the table.
The NSF wouldn’t be where it is today if it wasn’t for its first director, Alan T. Waterman. His guidance, passion for #knowledge and legacy of scientific excellence still guides NSF to this day. Decades later, his vision of #NSF continues to shape the breakthroughs driving our #future.
For over 75 years, NSF has supported thousands of scientists pursue scientific research that aims to elevate society.
This month, we will be covering our heroes whose contributions have transformed our society, changed scientific inquiry and discovery.
If we don’t course-correct immediately, the gap in innovation leadership won’t just widen—it will become permanent.

This isn’t just a major setback. It’s a threat to economic security:
⚠️ Slower innovation
⚠️ Higher consumer tech prices
⚠️ Fewer resources for universities and students
⚠️ A shrinking pool of world-class professionals
Major funding cuts to computer science, #technology, math and other key sectors severely undermine the United States position and leadership. Will the US be ready for the next cybersecurity threat or win the race to maximize AI’s potential?
Losing the next tech race - Countdown to the State of the Union: The Cost of Cutting Science
While the world races into a new era of #AI and advanced technology, the Trump Administration proposed slashing NSF’s budget in this critical tech race.
Scientific research has been critical to rapid medical advancements, life changing cures, and innovation over the last century. From the invention of penicillin to vaccines, these discoveries were made possible by creating a free environment from political bias and bullying. #SaveNSF
One example: A groundbreaking initiative aimed at expanding biomedical knowledge graphs to include Social Determinants of Health (SDoH) data. This could result in a critical step toward understanding how lifestyle and environment impact #health outcomes. That project is currently terminated.
The pace of #medicaladvances for diseases plaguing Americans will stall over the coming years. Cuts to key research projects on diabetes, Alzheimer, pneumonia, diabetes, strokes and other life-threatening diseases are being abandoned, leaving millions without the promise of new treatments.
American Health - Countdown to the State of the Union: The Cost of Cutting Science
When #science funding disappears, so does hope for life-saving breakthroughs.
With the closure of ARCUS, the way Alaska operates will never be the same.
#SaveNSF, #RestoreARCUS!
For over 40 years, ARCUS has lead dozens of projects that helped the indigenous community, conducted deep sea #exploration throughout the #Arctic, forecasted changes in sea ice, and provided vital information to local hunters and businesses that relied on Alaskan shipping channels.
Due to NSF funding cuts, we are losing key research centers like the Arctic Research Consortium of the U.S. (ARCUS). In September, ARCUS closed its doors and stopped operations.
Arctic Exploration - Countdown to the State of the Union: The Cost of Cutting Science
What mysteries does the Arctic still hold? We may never know thanks to the Trump Administration.
For generations, the US has attracted the brightest minds in the world to conduct research. This anti-intellectual administration is not only killing our potential #progress but our reputation as an advance technological country. Enough is enough! #SaveNSF

With budget cuts and biased research proposals becoming the norm, American researchers and scientists are relocating to Europe – threatening the U.S.’s reputation as a beacon for innovation and ingenuity.
Mass Exodus - Countdown to the State of the Union: The Cost of Cutting Science
What happens when #scientists no longer see the U.S. as home for scientific research and discovery? For generations, U.S. research institutions have been magnets for the world’s brightest scientists.
Follow along as we post everyday leading up to the State of the Union. We will be highlighting cuts made to the National Science Foundation in 2025 that have impacted the future of science.

Our global edge in #science is slipping, our international reputation is deteriorating, and the promise for #progress and #innovation is faltering.
The United States can’t afford to fall behind. #SaveNSF
In 2025, there were over 1,300 grant cuts with no warning. $700 million in unspent funds were eliminated. The fallout? Thousands of jobs lost, critical research projects abandoned, and years of STEM education wiped out.
Thank you @standupforscience.bsky.social for putting this together!

Science allies in the Senate, John Hickenlooper (D-CO) and Michael Bennet (D-CO), put forth an amendment to last week's spending package which would have safe-guarded NCAR funding from these cuts.
But the Senate passed that spending package last Thursday and the amendment was not included.
NSF NCAR - The National Center for Atmospheric Research needs you NOW!
