Eye-opening investigation by @wired.com into the world of an Indian college student churning out lucrative, "hot MAGA girl" AI-generated slop — including lucrative nude images from Grok that he used to make money on an OnlyFans knock-off platform.

Nick's superchats look like this, so we used an AI tool to tally up the tips. His revenue spiked after the Tucker interview, from $60k a month to $100k. "People are fanatical" because they "feel conflicted and misunderstood like I do,” Nick told me wapo.st/4mERkhv

How to Verify Bystander Video From the Minneapolis shootings to the Guthrie kidnapping, visual investigation skills are now mandatory. Here's how to do it.

The truth about the killing of Renee Good & Alex Pretti by US immigration officers would likely have never been known without bystander video. But authenticating user-generated content in the age of context manipulation & AI deepfakes means video verification is a critical skill for journalists.

‘Trump Says…’: The Journalistic Scourge of Echo-Chamber Headlines Time and time again, major news organizations have fallen victim to the trap of taking whatever was the latest thing to come out of Trump’s mouth and reflexively turning it into a stenographic, town-c...

I wrote about this shameful phenomenon back in 2018, when news org headlines first started deferentially repeating almost anything Trump said, before they had the handy packaging of Truth Social.

A Prominent PR Firm Is Running a Fake News Site That’s Plagiarizing Original Journalism at Incredible Scale A PR firm is running a strange AI-fueled plagiarism mill that's ripping off — and mangling — a huge amount of local and national reporting.

NEW: A PR company is operating a bizarre fake news site that's plagiarizing original journalism at a massive scale -- all while spewing misinformation, publishing hallucinated quotes, and replacing real people’s names with “Jane Doe.”

Also: it misquotes the Pope.

Yea, exactly, US sports fans distinguish between the two and treat the mascotted individuals as it sounds, plural form. Which is why a pet peeve of mine is when people say: "I'm a Yankee fan" (oh really, which specific player do you only like lol?)

The editor in me is struck by how he has clearly absorbed foreign football coverage and code switches into UK/EU sports grammar using the plural verb form for the team name — "Arsenal are" — when I doubt he would ever say "New York are" if talking about the Knicks.

We at @gijn.org love a good "How We Did It." (We have a section on our site devoted to covering them: gijn.org/topic/how-th...).
Organized crime, corrupt politicians, and other bad actors routinely conspire, so reporters should also recognize the need to share tips, tradecraft, & lessons learned.

For @gijn.org's 10 Questions series, today we talk to the 2025 African Investigative Journalist of the Year, Dewald van Rensburg.

DvR on the biggest challenge facing IJ: "Time and money. Most journalists have nothing remotely like the luxury of time we at @amabhungane.bsky.social are afforded."

Oh, absolutely. Cops and courts reporters are routinely working on deadlines and there's obviously no PIO working for defendants or their attorneys, which makes source capture by law enforcement de rigueur in many newsrooms.

I'm sorry but this is pure journalistic negligence by @nytimes.com here.
The US just arguably experienced the biggest, nationwide demonstrations in its history two weeks ago — and there's no question one overriding message of the 3/28 protests was "No War with Iran."

Law enforcement statements should always be treated with skepticism by reporters, but @propublica.org shows that claims by ICE & other agencies involved in Trump anti-immigrant sweeps deserve to be treated as totally unreliable without independent corroboration.

Adding: I've long thought the WHCA Dinner was shot through with too many conflicts of interest to be worthwhile. But the idea of inviting *this* president, who will have sued many (most?) of the news orgs of those attending, to the event—even with a token gesture of outrage—really defies logic.

After a federal judge just dismissed Trump's frivolous lawsuit against the @wsj.com for publishing his alleged birthday note to Jeffrey Epstein, this @stevebenen.com column helpfully lays bare how Trump really is the most litigious, anti-free press POTUS of the modern era.

One thing that having a Public Editor did for the Times was to provide a mechanism to flag, interrogate, and seek accountability for such a myopic editorial breakdown.

But without that role, the paper doesn’t have to really explain itself (beyond this short note) or is compelled to improve/change.

Very relevant today — @gijn.org with a look back 10 years on at the long-term impact of the #PanamaPapers investigation.

Here, a former partner at the main Panamanian law firm involved accepts his fate for his crimes, in a German court.

This is vindication for the investigative journalists who courageously exposed the horrific misconduct by Roberts-Smith—and who faced the most expensive defamation suit in AUS history yet proved their reporting.
Also, it’s a great reminder that accountability can still happen, even if years later.
