...it's better for a more agile platform, because it's closer to the center of mass and doesn't need the weight of a solid shell if there's a transparent canopy. the power plant can be placed in the abdomen and more weight can be allocated towards armaments/mobility systems

...a front-mounted cockpit is a more satisfying problem to solve though. it makes a platform feel more like an extension of the pilot, frontal visibility isn't a problem and there's less need for spatial compensation. it feels more like a mount, safely carrying you.

...it's easier to protect the cockpit from frontal incoming fire this way too, provided the platform has sufficient plating. easy to eject as a seperate module in case of severe damage, really cool also to see a hatch that opens at the back as the mech goes hull-down. it makes feasable sense

a back-joint mounted cockpit is cool always don't get me wrong. it's easy to incorporate into a robust mobile platform of compact size. front visibility problem can be solved by just cameras fed to cockpit screens or AR helmet display
