But yeah. TLDR - the changes to selective service don't really change anything. And Trump can't initiate a draft.
Ultimately, it feels like a power play/fear mongering. But doesn't change anything? The draft/selective service has existed the whole time. not signing up is a felony that can result in a 250,000 fine and 5 years in prison. It's wild. Which is why most states made it automatic.
The bullshit/fear coming out of this is
- Trump dodged the draft and is now touting automatic enrollment.
- they didn't need to do this. Most men are already in selective service bc most states are automatic.
- they decided to do this 1 months into the Iran war, which obvs comes with concerns
This doesn't change how the draft works or if it's active(it's not). Trump can't initiate it. Congress has to pass a bill initiating a draft. There is currently nothing being put through to start an active draft. It just means in like 5 states where men had to manually sign up, it'll be automatic.
So the long and short is-- all men always had to sign up for the draft within 30 days of their 18th birthday. Failure to register is a crime technically. It is automatic in most states, but not all. In December they are making the draft automatic nationwide.
