GULF OF FEAR: This past week, when NASA astronauts returned to Earth, TV news networks avoided calling the body of water they splashed down in as the Gulf of Mexico.
Instead, they performed linguistic gymnastics to stay out of Trump’s crosshairs.

This thread is an amazing microcosm of the modern complex food system and why tariffs are going to affect things in all sorts of unpredictable ways
Senator Schumer on the Galactic Empire: we will allow them to blow up planets for now in the event this makes them unpopular and then maybe we can get some of their support to stop blowing up planets
We are now in an era where protesting a car company is domestic terrorism, protesting genocide is international terrorism, and criticism of the tech industry is prohibited speech.
I don't think any sci-fi writers of generations past could have done our dystopia justice.
We all felt that deep sigh and shake of the shoulders of "why am I even having to do this" that Trudeau did right as he walked up to the podium.

The sane washing is exhausting.
The phrase "irresponsible" gets thrown around a lot these days. Also "self-destructive." "Politically inept." "What if this thisisfine.gif dog got a taxpayer salary."
‘International law? Screw it.’
‘International institutions? Screw it.’
‘Multilateral agreements? Screw it.’
@lewisgoodall.com thinks Donald Trump is the first post-war president to misunderstand what US power is for and warns, ‘we can’t trust this guy.’
Trump axed hundreds of FAA officials, fired the TSA chief and froze air traffic controller hiring.
Now, this has been US aviation’s deadliest week since November of 2001.
We are about 48 hours away from seeing this from the Pentagon
It was no game on Thursday when area water managers were given about an hour’s notice that the Army Corps planned to release water up to “channel capacity,” the top amount rivers can handle, immediately. The Army Corps later agreed to more measured releases, alleviating a mad scramble to alert first responders and have crews on standby in case river banks were breached and levees overtopped, as happened during the 2023 floods.
There was a genuine moment when the Army Corps almost released enough water to potentially breach levees and cause a new flood, but apparently the adults in the room managed to stop it. What the fuck.
okay _now_ we have the PR ammunition. so out of touch he doesn't understand it's his own military and he is (for now) the commander-in-chief. thinks it's just some tragic accident on TV in another country that he has no ability to do anything about when he's in fact in charge of the Pentagon.
Is Congestion Pricing Working: Yes.

Call it a purge, not a buyout. Call it a coup against Congress, not a spending pause. Call it censorship, not a review. Words matter, and we in the media have a chance to do better this time.
An effinbirds mug asking a mother fucker if they need a nap.
Yes, @effinbirds.com; I most certainly do.
The average ticket price for a single seat at Wicked was $290. I have yet to meet a real live human being deterred from attending a Broadway show because of a $9 congestion pricing charge, but there are some ex-MTA trolls on X who would have you believe those people exist.
The right has found a way to combine their favorite bogeymen: diversity initiatives, California governance, and climate science.
There's always SpaceHey.
Finally re-did the DNS handle on this account so that I don't need to squat my old @robxu9.bsky.social handle too!
Holy shit this filing update is wild! It states that:

The right's falsehoods about the L.A. fires are meant to dismiss – or distract from – "the realities of climate change," @pbump.com writes. He says it's "2020 election denialism wearing a different outfit." www.washingtonpost.com/politics/202...
Have written about Starmer's speech- his best moment yet as PM. He implicitly identified what sits at the heart of this story: the emergence of a common UK/US online right, headed by the radicalised Musk.
It is making extremist, until recently fringe politics mainstream in British conservatism.
Volt Man Mo DiMaggio gets it. The Times found a good one.
Love getting random calls asking if I need car accident assistance because someone hit me last week. Isn't there supposed to be a delay before my number becomes public record?
(This was in Florida, by the way.)
Happy Christmas! Time to spend the next week trying to regain some semblance of social energy.
