To shake off our torpor we need courage — it looks like this Liberal democracies have spawned a political class wedded to the short-term and allergic to risk, so we’re in danger of being overwhelmed by this century’s forces. A few nimble states offer us a bluep...

Usually journalists hold their breath when looking at below-the-line comments. I usually do.

As Trump flounders in Iran, taking a swipe at the Pope and all who cross him, and as Hungary shows the way, is the time for optimism? Only if liberal democracy finds imagination and courage. That's the message of 'Braver New World', my journey to 10 countries in search of best practice. Out Thursday

What better day to be (cautiously) hopeful about the state of our politics than after the Hungary result. Was a delight to do Start the Week this morning with Natasha Walter Nick Niarchos and Tom Sutcliffe on Radio 4.

Braver New World is out this Thursday!

The lesson of the result in Hungary is that if you campaign with courage you will earn trust. But that's the (relatively) easy bit. What matters for democratic politicians is what they do once they have power. Caution has been the watchword for too long. I'll be discussing this on BBC Radio 4 at 9

Viktor Orbán, the man who broke Hungary Even if he loses the general election, Orbán will retain his grip on the country’s institutions, which he has stacked with his placemen. That could spell disaster for whoever wins – and for Hungary

As Hungarians decide the fate of the man loved by Trump & Putin, here are two pieces from the campaign trail. As someone who spent years in the GDR & USSR, it was a reminder of how far authoritarians will go to cling to power
