An orange star with a stream of light in orbit and a small reddish dot.
Wow! Astronomers from MIT have discovered a #planet that's crumbling to pieces. It loses a Mount Everest's worth of material with every orbit around its star. Yesterday, EarthSky interviewed the study's lead author, Marc Hon of MIT. #exoplanets ☄️🔭

Long bright streak of light in night sky full of stars. A barren tree with branches reaches up in the foreground.
#Spacerocks tend to be rich in water, carbon and organic compounds. Yet the #meteorites that have made it to Earth are not. Why? A new study found that space rocks traveling near the sun lose much of their carbon material before they even make it to Earth. ☄️🌎🔭

Star chart with 2 slightly different crescent moon phases on December 3 and 4 near Venus.
Tonight and tomorrow night, many will be asking: “What’s that bright #star by the #moon?” But it’s not a star. It's the planet #Venus, the brightest planet we see from Earth. 🌒🌟

On dark space background, a circular spacecraft lies exactly in front of the sun, with wispy light streaming outwards around the edge. Towards the bottom of the image, another satellite points towards the eclipsed sun.
Coronagraphs block the sun’s glare with a disk called an occulter. But for ESA’s new #Proba3 mission, the occulter will be on a separate satellite, forming the largest-ever #coronagraph. ☀️🛰️

Chart with 2 stars at the top. Below them, there is a red dot for Mars, a circle for the Beehive and an almost half moon.
Hey night owls! Look for the moon close to Mars and the faint Beehive star cluster late tonight. Also nearby will be the twin stars of Gemini: Castor and Pollux. They’ll be visible through dawn:

A house at the bottom right. A rough sea on the left side. A double rainbow from the house to the sky. It disappears in the center of the sky.
Cecille Kennedy from Depoe Bay, Oregon, shared this image on Monday: “Late morning double partial beauty. The secondary rainbow over the original or main rainbow has the colors inverted, as is the case with secondary rainbows.” Thank you!
