What is one of the worst impacts of AMOC shutdown that I could add to this?
Perhaps an impact in the tropics that hasn't been talked about much.
It needs to be a short label ๐ท

A short blog about our project - addressing the challenge of highlighting the links between university modules & sustainability.

Should also relabel AMOC.
Most people don't know what it stands for, or what a shutdown really means.
Any ideas of one thing that shutting down would have, that fits on a short label?
A slight update to include the recent AMOC discussion.
- tipping point about 2050
- 50% showdown by 2100 (though im still uncertain how big a deal this is).
- shutdown around 2150-2200 - a big deal - e.g. Northern Europe gets a lot colder in winter.
Is this more or less correct?
Arrived at the ESD Exchange conference at De Montfort University, Leicester.
Tomorrow, I'll give a talk about what we have learnt from a project where students make videos linking their modules to sustainability.
But today I'll be finding out what others have been up to!
The temperature๐กof our planet ๐ over the next 80 years in the context of the last 20,000 years.
Without a lot more serious efforts to reduce CO2 emissions ๐ญ โ๏ธ ๐ & protect our forests ๐ณ.

Is anyone up to using the data in this thread to make a rough estimate the max temperature ๐ก of an exceptional heatwave in the USA ๐บ๐ธ in around 70-100 years time? (Assuming about 3C warming).
Or know this from another source.
I'd like to add it to the graph.

Sounds good, but how do we listen to it?
The fact that so few people have any vision of the world in 80 year's time is something climate scientists & journalists/ bloggers need to address.
Finding a meaningful label for food security, or even heatwaves for this graph ranges from difficult to near impossible.
It may seem like nerdy detail that the increasing weight of cars is worsening potholes, but it matters.
The car makers push to sell wider and heavier cars is increasing road maintenance costs and that affects us all.
Not to mention worse crash outcomes and less space to pass (wider) parked cars.
Added most of the remaining references to the PowerPoint.
The historic African climate info, e.g. dry Lake Victoria is from refs in here.

In-depth - but very readable account on how heating our ๐ could lead to tipping points in Atlantic currents, with big implications for Europe.
Huge uncertainty - but we are running the experiment now, so young people may well find out.

Some suggestions to encourage climate activism - for various people.
There is quite a lot of similarities to some of the discussion here.

Fun listen re #climate touching on:
- How fast we need to move to keep global tems to below 2C. (we won't)
- The failure of scientists & journalists to get this message across & to communicate what sort of world we are heading for.

The NASA climate change information page aimed at young people, has turned into a misinformation site.
The NASA climate change information used to be excellent.

Global temperatures over the last 20,000 years, and the next 80 years.
Some small updates included.
An interesting listen.
I don't think that it's easy for the media to figure out what the future might hold. There are some who are trying.
I once tried to figure out what an exceptional heatwave (duration/ max temperature) might be like in the UK in today's babies lifetimes.
I failed.
Happy to update - if anyone has more accurate information with a link/ reliable source.
There is also room for one more climate impact at 2100 (given current policies. But it needs to be a very short label ๐ท. Any ideas?

Our planet's temperature ๐ก over the last 20,000 years, and the next 80 years.
Updated to include hurricanes.
This created a lot of interest on Twitter. It is likely the most impactful graph for highlighting the seriousness of climate change.
Our planet's temperature over the last 20,000 years & the next 80 years.
Slightly updated.
Thanks, Ill midify for the next version. Future is mostly vague guess.
'd like to change the labels with more meaningful events, but short.
Its quite hard to think of them.
Biologist Paul Ehrlich speaking at the University of San Diego circa 1972
1/ Paul Ehrlich died this week at 93.
The takes split into hagiography and dismissal. But the interesting question isn't whether he got it right, he didn't, it's why he got it wrong, and who was asking the right questions instead ๐งต
It would be good to acknowledge the original graph maker, but I have no idea who did it.
Anyone know?
