I've been back to Yakushima 5 times since. Each time I go there's new places I haven't been previously, for a small place, there's a lot of nooks and crannies. I haven't seen him again though. I doubt he'd recognise me. It's been 16 years now. I've changed quite a bit physically.

He then dropped us in town and recommended some restaurants. One of the yakiniku places he pointed out has since become one of my favourites. I try to eat there at least once each time I return.

We saw him one more time the day we left back for the mainland. He cheerfully waved us goodbye.

Which ironically is where I settled next. I wonder if he has criminal connections. He was a delightful tour guide, taking us to a lighthouse on the edge of a tiny peninsula. Pointing out the monkeys as they came down in the cooler evening.

Dragon Three is how he introduced himself, picking me and my ex up from a bus stop at a beach 20 minutes from Miyanoura, we'd just missed the bus and the next one wasn't for another 4 hours.

He was bald, dressed flamboyantly and had arm tattoos, something uncommon. He said he came from Osaka.

I often find myself thinking about the stranger who showed me around Yakushima on my first visit. It has since become my favourite place on Japan. I wonder if I'd not met him, would I still have the same positive feelings towards the island.

Everyone needs more Dragon Three's in their travels.
