Picture of street filled with people when cars are prohibited, with a prominent sign saying “road closed.”
Via Urban Truth Collecrive
(Also, it’s a street, not a road)
How come they keep spelling “open” wrong?
Does that street look closed to you? Only if you’re a car… and presumably that’s the real problem. #UrbanTruth

If you have a green signal, you have the right of way to enter the intersection to make a left turn, so long as you yield to oncoming traffic. It's ironic that you are so impatient about pedestrians but will willingly and needlessly sit through multiple signal cycles to make a left turn.

If a driver making a left turn enters the intersection on a green but cannot complete the turn until the signal is red, I don't crash into them just because my signal turned green. I wait until I have a green signal AND the intersection is clear. A pedestrian has the same right of way on their green

If each lane is 11' that adds up to nearly 100' of distance to be crossed. Average walking speed is 4.6 ft/s which makes for a 21 second crossing time on that distance. Up to 50% of pedestrians will be slower than the average walking speed. 9 seconds of additional time is not unreasonable.

Drivers and pedestrians take turns at signalized intersections. This all started because you said pedestrians aren't entitled to take their full "turn" because the signal phase is 30 seconds, and you feel that's too long. You're the one being disrespectful of other people's time.

Believe it or not, everyone who drives is also a walker! How else do you get to your car and from your car to your destination?

Walking is by definition the least privileged form of transportation because it's the default. If you have no other resources or wealth to procure alternative transportation, walking is how you will get around.
People walking absolutely have all the same responsibilities as anyone else.

If you're consistently feeling impatience behind the wheel because signalized intersections are making you late, you're not leaving early enough. The fault for your impatience lies with your decision, not the walk signs.

Good thing you've got an entertainment console to listen to music or podcasts and climate control to keep you comfortable while you patiently and compassionately wait. Give me a fucking break.

As far as I can tell, everybody on Minneapolis BlueSky is spending the day deeply engaging with local politics and everyone on Saint Paul BlueSky is spending the day eating a giant sandwich and drinking beer. And that feels right to me.

Hey yesterday I emailed an archivist with, and I quote, “do you know what ‘bundle dated 1190-1200,46’ might be?” And they emailed me back within an hour with the full text of a deed and a translation
so yeah, ask a librarian (and archivists)

Instead of asking chatgpt, why not ask a librarian? You'll get real answers and they won't tell you to kill yourself.

Image of the proposed 466 mile citywide bike network in Milan being built for $285M.
This is more than 11x the amount that Minneapolis has spent on bike infrastructure in the past decade.
Milan GDP: $250B
Mpls GDP: $350B
For comparison, the 494 expansion from Edina to Richfield will cost $377M. 494/35W interchange: $255 million.
We can have nice things. We just choose not to.

"No one should expect busy parents to shuttle families around on bikes or Metro Transit in the dead of winter."
As cities, we actually can expect people to make decisions that improve our collective and future well-being—and it's our job to make policies to incentivize that type of decision-making.

I was thinking this morning how both Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan would have been delighted to see a Westward-looking, centre-right party defeat a pro-Russian autocrat in a former Eastern Bloc country.

If you put a grocery store next to a high-speed arterial, bad things are likely to happen.
"Land use decisions—particularly the siting of groceries, pharmacies, gas stations, and fast-food outlets—are strongly associated with the death and injury of vulnerable road users."

The thing is: EVs will only continue to get cheaper, gas will only become more expensive as oil becomes more scarce. EV battery materials are largely recyclable at the end of useful life, oil extraction for gas production is a perpetual process because you destroy the product when you use it.
