This has been my year as well. It's like the most bitter sweet thing ever... Knowing you have alllll the things but it's no longer going to be good enough due to things that have nothing to do with science, excellence, or merit.

Anyone have thoughts on why preprints now appear on pubmed but I can't filter for review articles?!?!

How is this a useful update?!?!

I literally spend hours training students that Pubmed should be used for searches as it only produces high quality, rigorously scrutinized articles.. Scratch that

Awesome opportunity for trainees to "pitch" their work!

Not only great way to get your name out there but also a sweet, sweet cash prize!

In case it helps the one friend at all, if their passport is expiring within a year, they can renew on-line and do not need to send in their current passport.

It all makes me so angry. I recently got mine renewed with 2 years left and got both my young children's for the first time because of fear

Are we, as NIH grant recipients, expected to participate in the Monday productivity email?

....I think at this point we should, because who knows what retroactive expectations we might encounter. Might as well be proactive!

Assuming there's some sort of slowing or stoppage of the insanity, the real stories are going to be inspiration for fiction for decades to come... Like no one can make this stuff up...

I think my favorite is the J6 Choir potentially performing at the Kennedy center... And mostly because I had no idea there was a J6 Choir... And then I learned that they released a track in 2023... Look it up. I can't do the track justice with the remaining characters.

However, given extra consideration for those things, I have at least made it to the table and often been successful.

As a middle-aged woman in engineering & higher Ed, I can tell many stories, even recently, where I was automatically dismissed for my gender, employer's public status, and/or other identies before my thoughts or qualifications were presented.

All of the above.

If we are not allowed to consider or present an applicants' background beyond grades and superficial activities (worse if community service is punished!), then we lose context and the additional challenges they may have overcome to just pull even with someone else in grades.

Agreed. but by doing away with DEI initiatives we will be forced to consider solely at grades and other metrics that can be easily swayed by opportunity and familial network.
Many of the people who would be highly successful long term won't even make it past the first screen.

Why are you so against it? Were you passed over for something you don't feel was warranted?

isn't usually as resilient and hard working as the A-/B+ person from a less resourced school and/or who is balancing academics with caring for a relative or working to contribute to their household income and stability.

Academic achievements as grades on paper aren't necessarily everything. In my experience someone coming from a highly resourced high school district with all As and after school activities with little actual responsibility, self-planning, or leadership opportunities
