We closed the day with WP4, which focuses on implementing and evaluating the S4R Toolbox in elderly care across six European countries. Today’s session covered intervention design, pilot feedback from Norway, and a 10-minute round for partners to share progress. 🔍
💡As a reminder, the objective of WP3 is to develop content and IT infrastructure for the S4R Toolbox, design interventions, and perform pilot testing to make sure the Toolbox is practical, effective, and ready for real-world use.
Kicking off the Support4Resilience annual meeting in Turku, Finland! 🙌
We began the session by focusing on WP3. Teams participated in a hands-on workshop simulating real-life use of the S4RToolbox, sparking discussions on improvements and evaluating its current status.

We wrap up three intense days working on the S4R Toolbox together with colleagues from UCY, UiS and NTNU, hosted by the @eurofue-uji.bsky.social (FUE–UJI) team in Spain.
Lots of collaboration, shared learning and valuable feedback.
🙌Thanks to everyone involved!!
Anonymity is essential for healthcare resilience. Workers must feel safe to respond truthfully.

We’ve started the S4R Toolbox pilot in Norway 🙌
Last week, the NTNU team led the first workshop with healthcare leaders, with support from @unistavanger.bsky.social. The group quickly adapted to the toolbox and found it useful.
Here’s a glimpse of the session!
Who actually holds up the long-term care system?
Middle managers.
Our analysis across 7 countries shows they are stuck in the "multiple middle" mediating between:
- Regulatory frameworks
- Workforce strategies
- The reality of daily care

We’ve just closed three intense days of work in Stavanger 🇳🇴, where the Support4Resilience team gathered for the kick-off of WP4!
Thank you to the whole team for these days of shared effort — now on to the next steps.
At #HCAC2025 in Amman, Carsten Engel (CEO of @isqua.org) presented Support4Resilience, our EU-funded project creating a toolbox to help healthcare leaders strengthen resilience and support caregivers’ wellbeing.

Last week we joined the National Patient Safety Conference in Norway, where Cecilie Haraldseid shared insights on resilient health systems and on what it takes to recruit and maintain a strong healthcare workforce.
Thanks to I trygge hender 24-7 for the great organization.
In our new blog post, authors Eila Kankaanpää and Anna-Kaisa Vartiainen discuss why we need research that listens to staff and addresses organizational realities, not just individual coping.

What happens when support focuses on symptoms, not systems?
While informal carers often get counseling, our systematic review found that interventions for elderly care workers are often limited to relaxation techniques.
Breathing exercises don't fix shift stability or workload.

A key insight: middle managers play a central role in turning policies into daily practice and supporting workers’ wellbeing. Strengthening their capacity is essential for resilient LTC systems.
The study compares LTC systems in Norway, Finland, the Netherlands, Romania, Spain, Italy and Australia. Despite different structures, all rely on similar strategies like ageing in place, digital tools and task shifting.
What do the long-term care systems of seven countries have in common?
Our latest article explores this question and reveals the common challenges in caring for older people, especially labour shortages.

Based on data collected in six European countries, the S4R Toolbox responds to a clear need: resilience isn’t about coping harder but about redesigning systems that protect wellbeing, sustain care quality and prepare organisations to adapt to change.

São Paulo, done✅
This week we joined the 41st ISQua International Conference, sharing what S4R is all about — practical tools, real findings, and conversations on how leaders can make care workplaces healthier and more resilient.
Grateful for the exchange and the energy!
Key findings: organisational and managerial interventions are scarce.
For workers, only a few approaches helped (mindfulness, breathing, ACT).
For informal caregivers, support or counselling and skills training showed more consistent gains.
