Self-Awareness and Human Connection photo by Mary Beth Hertz Cultivating self-awareness allows us to see others as complete human beings, fostering deeper connections that can counteract societal division. A fascinating side effect of being an educator and parent of school age children has been a shift in how I perceive and interact with not just the families I work with, but with people in all different settings. The woman running the register at the store I’m shopping in may have kids at home who depend on her. The greeter at Walmart has his own life, goals, and hobbies, and maybe a family at home as well.

Poem next to an older radio.
"I'm learning to tune out the chatter--
adjusting these rusty antennae
to the still calm of static.
Glorious white noise
in a cacophonous world."

I can't help but notice that he has "scaring," not "scarring" from a gunshot wound.

This is a wonderful description of how to address students' use of AI in a caring, productive, and open way.

I find myself trying to explain to the young ones that what they consider "cool 90s" now made us unbelievably uncool back then. I've never been so cool in my entire life.

This is a very good book. I stumbled onto James McBride's "Heaven and Earth Grocery Store" and fell in love with his writing and the amazing narration by Dominic Hoffman.

The work must continue. Today was energizing....as long as it's not a stand-alone event.

I protest because it's safer for me to do it. I show up for folks who can't. Today's march in Philly was unbelievably white in a city that is not.

Please do not register for protests. I'm big mad that this is even being asked of people. You know where and when to be. Show up.

This is like watching Sen. Cory Booker's brain right before he falls asleep when your brain spins and revisits all the conversations you had that day and all the things you wish you had said. It's brilliant to watch and hear how brilliant that brain is.

(2/2) Instead we tell them they are lazy, unmotivated, incapable or broken in so many other ways. The traditional path to success that we take for granted is and has been blown apart for years. They are unmotivated to play the game we are selling. Time to change the game.....

OR maybe the story we've been telling and the aspirations WE hold and imposed are NOT the same for this generation. I've found that, deep down, the young people I work with have dreams but they need opportunities and structures to explore and discover their strengths. (1/2)

I have no idea how old that woman is supposed to be if that's what a mid-to-late 40s woman is purported to look like I must be woefully out of style 😬🤣
