Gencarelli has designed the European Commission's data protection and — especially — international data flows policy for years. He was a key decision maker in the EU-U.S. tensions over how companies like Facebook were allowed (or not) to send data to the U.S.
Bit of a shock in the EU data protection bubble today: members of the European Parliament's civil liberties committee picked Commission official Bruno Gencarelli as their choice to lead the EU's in-house privacy regulator, beating the incumbent Wojciech Wiewiórowski in a secret vote.
