I'm sure you've thought a lot about the 1" increase in self-reported heights in the US. Do you know about the methodology for each of the researcher-measured heights between EU and US reports? My initial thought was people most likely measure themselves with shoes on without thinking about it.

I feel like there's a bon mot in there about it being virtually certain that physicists working on hidden variable QM theories will be doing the exact same thing in 30 years.

Any clue why?

Glad to see Facebook is desperate enough that they've started advertising.

And sadly we're probably too used to being honest and straightforward at this point to really be good pathological liars.

Doesn't Eliezer Yudkowsky kind of have his own cult though?

Just wanted to celebrate and share a friend's publishing a new biophysics article on how lithium's thermodynamic interaction with cell membranes functions to help treat bipolar disorder (open access):

@fdsignifier.bsky.social: I heard you mention the idea of "putting on your clown shoes" to get involved with political discourse. Do you have an example of what that might look like?

Fascism works on the fear and silent "consent" of the governed. i.e. we should mostly disconnect from things that aren't helpful to us and focus on limited areas where being non-compliant or actively resisting will matter.

It reiterates what we learned previously - that electoral politics is a distraction if the Dems would rather lose than adopt progressive policies.

The "push back" is on us now. We should learn from 2016 not to fall prey to the media's controversy, shock, apathy cycle.

Trump did not win the election, so much as Harris and the Dems lost it:

2020
Joe Biden 81,268,924
Donald Trump 74,216,154

2024
Donald Trump 76,398,185
Kamala Harris 73,688,756

Trump's improvement on votes in 4 years was modest, at best.

I think a corollary could be: to help you envision better worlds that could exist.

Your politics are bullshit if they are, at the core, "everyone who doesn't share my political views are idiots". I'm not immune to this either.

Choosing a doctor gets simpler in Florida, where you just need to filter the ones promoting junk therapies.
