I read a couple at that age but just didn’t dig it. I know others whose love is real - though they will also cop to some of it being less than great.

I reckon if you read him and love him when you're 12 or 13 you just get the ability to ignore all that stuff.

You would think that a Labor government who effectively has no opposition and has time to create compassionate, well funded social policies wouldn't need to take to the NDIS with right wing, razor gang politics. But then such a government wouldn't be a Labor one.

My theory is he doesn't make a good movie if Bill Murray is in it.

How was it?

This app has been so broken recently. Dunno what's going on with things. But gotta respect the Gremlin post.

Today on books: At breakfast we’ll talk about how modern life is destroying literature. At lunch a writer will turn down 175k because. At two a right wing think tank will give them 175k anyhow. At six we’ll bitch about hardcovers and big books. At midnight, we’ll read The Tunnel.

Reckon you can ignore such a writer and comfortably think of them as bad, tbh

No Substance #261: Béla Tarr’s Sátántangó I had wanted to watch Béla Tarr’s Sátántangó for a while but I didn’t ever seem to have the time for it.

This week's No Substance is about Bela Tarr's Satantango, his massive, seven hour film.

Somehow I compare it to competitive eating.

It's been a bit of a surprise in the last week to see how many people believe in "genius". Even worse is how much people seem to be willing to justify in its name. I didn't actually think people went for that anymore.

The one that makes me chuckle is one by Lucius Shepard where he talks about a Griaule story and he says he likes big things so made a big dragon there’s not much else to it

Yeah, I think it’s quite common. I’m reading a Kiernan collection right now and they got that resented must I? vibe. Fortunately they’re short.

Yeah, it’s where you see the best and worst of it. It’s a selling point for some people, I think. But I dunno, think I can count on one hand writers who have done it well. Can think of plenty who I like who do it badly.

Ancillary Review of Books: Year 7! Questioning power, imagining possibility: ARB provides thoughtful criticism of speculative fiction. Help us pay our writers and staff!

Big news! ARB's first fundraiser is officially live! We're shooting for the very modest goal of $1k, with lots of stretch goals in mind. Your support is of course appreciated, and any help in spreading the word would be wonderful!

I used to love short story notes in collections. But nowadays I often think shut the fuck up when I see them. So many are lazy and shallow or just have a tone that makes you roll your eyes. Why bother? Let the stories tell you everything. Anyhow, you can’t please me, so ignore me.

I’m not a parent, but I can’t help but think it violates some kind of core ethic to turn in your kitkat stealing kids. Like, you should help them hide the evidence, withstand torture, shit like that right?

Grats! Also, never fear, I lack the cultural knowledge about both those things so can only be pleased for you.

Yesterday’s new arrival. @jeffreyford8.bsky.social has been putting out great collections of strange and weird stuff for a while now. This is his eighth. Pretty happy to see it.

I'm so sorry, man. Also: I want to show support but can't like this post cause it feels wrong to do so.

Yeah, I bought all three of their books. The Mazzetti wasn't one I knew much about, but I thought why not.
