Make a donation to help Minnesota volunteers and get a chance to win birthday gift *from* one of my favorite writers, Naomi Kritzer (I can't stop pushing her story "Cat Pictures Please" on unsuspecting strangers)
Happy birthday, @naomikritzer.bsky.social !
The local community radio station, KRBX, played this wonderfully daft Peter Sellers sketch last night: "A Hard Day's Night," in the style of Olivier as Richard III.
I'd somehow never seen it before. Love it!

SCOOP: Two weeks ago, the head of the CDC delayed publication of a report showing covid vaccine cut likelihood of ER visits and hospitalizations by half. Now that report is no longer allowed to be published in CDC’s flagship scientific journal. My latest. 1/2

When they received the call to respond to an Israeli airstrike in the city of Mayfadoun, in southern Lebanon, most of the paramedics held back, having previously seen colleagues killed by double-tap attacks targeting rescuers. But the medics from the Islamic Health Association (IHA) rushed to the scene. By the time the other emergency workers arrived at the site, they found the IHA medics had indeed been caught in a second strike. They started evacuating their wounded colleagues, only for their ambulances to be hit in two further attacks. One of the paramedics covered his ears and screamed, convulsing in pain as shrapnel shattered the back window of the ambulance. The rescue mission on Wednesday afternoon had turned into a nightmare as Israel carried out three consecutive strikes on three sets of ambulances and medical workers.
Israel performed a literal quadruple tap attack in Lebanon to massacre three separate sets of medics.
Truly pushing the bounds of human depravity.

The only 🧵 you need to read about the bogus DOJ case against the SPLC (at least until Wonkette's story is up, because of course you'll wanna read that).
1. The central claim in the indictment of SPLC is a lie.
The DOJ/FBI accuse SPLC of lying to donors about seeking to “dismantle” extremist groups while secretly funding them. But the funds were used to infiltrate & help law enforcement dismantle these groups. Kash Patel knows this is the truth…
In my mid-20s my then-wife and I camped in Arizona next to a couple with an RV; they were in their 70s and while she cooked dinner, he read to her from a birding book.
Not birders ourselves, but we agreed that would be an ideal life.
I don't like knowing that building a better world is going to require somehow corralling millions of the dumbest motherfuckers on Earth.
Like my new sticker?

No fuel stops. No price shocks. Just charge at home and drive.
This isn’t a drivetrain swap, it’s a system flip. From imported oil to rooftop energy.
Once the fleet scales, the economics break fast.
Cost always wins. #Bettrification

The Brits appear ready to shame the US news media into covering this, distracted as they are by gazing at their own navels ...
Republicans, for their part, have cast the push for a new map as a Democratic power grab. “Richmond liberals want to eliminate competitive elections in Virginia,” says an ad from Virginians for Fair Maps, the main Republican-aligned outside group in Virginia.
A more correct way to write this is: "Republicans, who famously love gerrymandering in every other case, are flooding Democratic and Black voters' phones and mailboxes with ratfucking mailers and texts falsely claiming that Obama, Spanberger, and the DNC are against the ballot measure."

Thanks to long days on the farm this past week, I've had a lot of time think. Here are some of the worst ideas I've had so far:
-Farm mockumentary a la Clarkson's Farm, but in the style of Veep
Donald Trump is a reflection of what America has become: a nation comprised primarily of uneducated, arrogant, racist buffoons without a conscience or even basic social skills, scamming their way thru life with impunity while believing that laws apply only to other people— never to them.
Current hostility (on the part of politicians and institutional leaders alike) to even looking at the past is strikingly blunt. It touches many disciplines, but denying history is the key issue.
The backlash against Bouie’s piece on Enlightenment and then the 1619 Project were public turning points
Tweet by "Bovril-Gesellschaft" NIXON: I was in a room. Red. Everything red, the, the curtains, the floor, zigzag pattern on the floor. Very disorienting. Very…the lighting was not good, I’ll say that. Whoever was responsible for the lighting in this room was not- it wasn’t a well-lit room, Bob. HALDEMAN: No, sir. NIXON: And there was a small man there. KISSINGER: Small in what sense, Mr. President? NIXON: In the sense of being… Henry, in the sense of being small. Physically. A little man. Very well dressed, I’ll give him that. Good suit. He had a, there was something about the way he moved that was- Bob, you’d have to see it. The way he moved and spoke was like a, a record played at the wrong speed. You know what I mean? Backwards somehow and yet you could still HALDEMAN: I think I follow, sir. NIXON: And there was a woman there. Beautiful woman. Just sitting. She wasn’t… she didn’t say anything, she just sat and- KISSINGER: A beautiful woman. NIXON: Don’t, Henry. KISSINGER: I said nothing. NIXON: I know the look. The woman is not the point. The point is the little man, because the little man came very close to me and he spoke and what he said was - now this is the part I need you both to…he said, “burn the tapes”. Fortunately Led Zeppelin modified the original title of the song, 𝘚𝘵𝘢𝘪𝘳𝘸𝘢𝘺 𝘵𝘰 𝘒𝘦𝘷𝘪𝘯, prior to the album’s release.
Remember how Donald Trump pretended like he created the word “affordability” because he claimed he never heard it before (wild in itself)?
I wonder if he’s gonna pretend like he created “a corner store” he’s never heard the phrase before too.
🙄
Then he'll insist that "Brimful of Asha on the 45" was about his first term.

All the usual suspects are insisting this tax on luxury second homes will drive the super-wealthy out of New York City, even though it's a tax on people who by definition *don't have primary residences there*

Oh, and another favorite: "I'm no geologist, but ..." which was used whenever the relevant area of expertise was everything but geology.
Not sure how they addressed disputes over geology, though.
Look at that doctor!
