🚨 JUST IN: Two essays offer contrasting perspectives about J. Robert Oppenheimer.
First, for @ericssinger.bsky.social, now that Oppenheimer has become a folk hero, he must be taught about in his full complexity.

Wednesday marks the 80th anniversary of the Trinity Test, the first ever human-controlled nuclear explosion.
On July 16, 1945, J. Robert Oppenheimer and a team of scientists detonated an atomic bomb on the Alamogordo Bombing Range in New Mexico as part of the Manhattan Project.
Right. Odds were “near zero” according to Bethe. Oppenheimer was worried enough to go to meet with Compton personally in Michigan.
he was a complicated guy

Nice! Amazing that the film has become such a cultural sensation.
Yeah it’s crazy. We have the ability to destroy 300,000 Hiroshimas today.

Congratulations!!
I was telling these kids the other day that they have to not just think about the implications of their work, but imagine the unintended implications. They wanted to know if Oppenheimer did.The answer? It’s complicated.. he experienced competing pressures. It’s hard to see clearly through wind and fog
Wow. Really excited about this.
Can’t wait to read this one. So much great nuclear age material coming out this year.

Sachi Komura Rummel was eight when the atomic bomb fell on Hiroshima just 3km away.
Rummel has since written a memoir, and will share her experience on Wednesday at the North Vancouver City Library: www.nvcl.ca/events/hiros...
That is what soldiers were told, but Truman knew the Japanese would be finished when the Soviets entered the war. From his diary, “Fini Japs when that comes about.” Even if an invasion had occurred, which it wouldn’t have bc the Soviets entered on 8/8, estimates were for 46,000 American casualties.
Yes, absolutely right. I wrote about that in my adaptation of American Prometheus. It’s what enabled the US to develop it as quickly as it did.. for better or worse.
