"If you cross the Halys River a great empire will fall." You know there's a catch to that, right?

Actually, the connection between tyranny and extravagant construction projects goes back Thousands of years? See under Periander of Corinth and Polycrates of Samos.
The image includes the quotation below, along with a picture of Harriet Tubman: If you hear the dogs, keep going. If you see the torches in the woods, keep going. If there's shouting after you, keep going. Don't ever stop. Keep going. If you want a taste of freedom, keep going. Harriet Tubman

"This war will be over in a matter of weeks, if not days." -Everyone who ever started a years'-long war.
The philosophy seems to be, "Free speech for me; you shut up. "
10 articles?!! I wasn't exaggerating. And you might think that football is more important than murder, but I don't.
Why do I have to scroll past 10 articles about sports and weather on the (digital) front page of the Boston Globe before I get to "The federal government is executing citizens in the streets"?
I don't think we should be surprised that a woman who shot and killed her own dog has unleashed federal agents who are shooting and killing poets and nurses.
We are not the first people, or the first country, to suffer under a tyrannical government that does not respect our lives, or our rights.
There is a method for how to effectively resist, and eventually topple, such a regime. We can learn from others who came before us.
This is my favorite guide.
I plan to tailor the ICE scripts by mentioning that I oppose federal agencies that deny people their constitutional due process rights; that break into the homes of citizens without judicial warrants; and that sanction extrajudicial murder.
Your reminder that the 5 calls app provides you with call scripts to make it easier to call your representatives and make your opinions heard on vital issues like, I dunno, abolishing ICE. You can tailor the scripts if you'd like, but you don't have to.

Now ICE agents are targeting police officers?! This is what happens when you have no significant requirements for recruiting.
Apparently Mark Carney has also been thinking about the Melian Dialogue.
I keep thinking about the Melian Dialogue, about the Athenians' stance just before they destroy the Melians: "The strong do what they can and the weak suffer what they must." Thucydides is famous for not commenting on what he reports, but the fact remains that Athenians lost the Peloponnesian War.
Some perspective: The S&P opened down -1.3% on Trump's Greenland saber-rattling. That's $750 billion of wealth destroyed -- roughly equal to estimates of the value of Greenland.
And so ~in dollar terms~ his shenanigans have already cost the US one Greenland, and we've got nothing to show for it.
Of course they did.
The last time that happened, the Civil War, we got land grant colleges. Maybe this time we can get universal health care.
If red states think it's a good idea to cancel the midterms, I invite them to sit them out. The rest of us plan to vote.
What a treat!
Also known as Instant Runoff Voting: 2nd choice=who you would vote for if your 1st choice is eliminated.
RCV cuts right through the Faustian bargain that virtually everyone else on this thread is trying to convince you to accept. You can vote FOR the candidate you like as your 1st choice and rank the Democrat as your 2nd choice.
Absolutely nothing, if you're using ranked choice voting.
Wasn't their oath to defend the Constitution? I guess whether or not they keep their oath depends on who benefits. Shameful.
Consider how long it took the MSM to use "lie" in connection with Trump, though he was documented as telling dozens of provable lies a day. And yet it was SO EASY to accuse Harris of lying when she was actually making a prediction. I wonder why such different treatment?
Evidently, the MAGA censors who thought that promoting Greek and Roman culture was their best intellectual move have just discovered the Symposium. Wait until they find out about the Sacred Band.

Rhiannon Giddens, Peter Wolf AND Low Cut Connie? Trump-and-Kennedy Center, you are screwed.
Raise your hand if you're tired of everything they don't like being labeled "far left." Cry wolf much?
Just a friendly reminder to surround yourself with the kind of people who support their local library, theatre, bakery, bookstore, and café.
I'm looking on the bright side: When he's finally removed from office, de-Trumpifying federal agencies will be spectacularly easy.
