The "no training" is always a lie anyway. They did not specifically go through a training plan for "this" marathon. They just did their usual fifty running miles each week and their three to four hours strength training every day. And of course their stationary bike and rower.

This is kinda complex imo. For a lot of people a supportive well built boot is still a good choice. If you are "hiking" for an hour trail runners are often a good choice. But yes to your main point, for many people trail runners have become trail shoes.
