Huge congratulations to Tracy Kimbrel, who received the 2025 ACM SIGACT Service Award π for his time, dedication, and advocacy as Program Director for the Algorithmic Foundations (AF) program at the NSF!

Indeed. Also, add to that the very long visa delays (with students admitted for September still waiting for their visa appointments). I know several international students who have offers from top PhD programs in the US but may prefer other countries due to all of this uncertainty.
Does anyone have pointers to interesting relevant research focusing on incentive design? E.g., incentives for improving review quality and/or for lowering the number of (low quality) submissions.
The big AI conferences seem to be really struggling to maintain their quality at scale and will likely need a much better incentive structure. The number of submissions is massive and the reviewing quality seems to be worse every year. PC members who do a very poor job face no real repercussions.
I wrote an intro to the literature on simple mechanisms. Out now in the JEP.
Itβs a short (14-page) plain-language summary, designed to get students to the research frontier. ππ
