Video

Absolutely incredible.

NASA Astronaut Reid Wiseman, who commanded Artemis II, took this footage from the far side of the Moon with his iPhone.

Watch with sound on.

Okay so you might see this video with the audio muted. Now imagine how the music must sound like. I urge you to unmute and listen to what it's actually like because I guarantee you you're not prepared for it.

yes but when you're trying to get 110 rings and you've just been hit by a bomb and now tails is in front of you and is losing tens of rings by the second that little jingle may as well be in another galaxy

i think souls/roguelikes tap into a more immediate loop of "try punishing thing and then retry it" - and then when you beat it, big tangible rewards/progress. with old games you just persevered for the sake of it, by your own willpower

speedrunners are superhuman we can't rationalise any of that

yeah MANY replays, LOTS of patience..... you couldn't demand that from players any more, surely?

anyway i just turned super sonic in aquatic ruins act 1 which is an indescribable power trip

video games really do cater to the male fantasy (of being a hedgehog so fast you can just jump over all the water sections)

just spent a significant amount of time savescumming special stage attempts to get all the emeralds in sonic 2

how on earth did anyone do this in the 90s? they're so mean. you NEED to learn patterns, but you'd have minutes between attempts, at best??? these games are assholes

completely inaccessible to new and younger players, unless they have exceptional patience i think. a lot of the level design is just incredibly mean. horrible little traps, hardly any time to react or adapt if you don't already know what's coming

just played sonic 1 all the way through. still slaps.

Either celebrate games as art, or drop the pretence. There’s not really a middle ground.

I love when you can tell a level designer was at the end of their rope at one point

- par time is not short for 'paradox time'
- par time IS an official concept created by id Software - it's listed on the level results screen. it's right there! it predates community speedrunning because the dev team did it themselves!!!

the article goes on but you get the picture

What is Par Time in Doom?
Par time, short for “paradox time,” refers to the theoretical minimum time required to complete a level in Doom. It is the fastest possible time that a player can achieve, taking into account the game’s physics, movement mechanics, and level design. Par time is not an official concept created by id Software, but rather a community-driven idea that has evolved over the years through the efforts of speedrunners and Doom enthusiasts.

The Origins of Par Time
The concept of par time in Doom dates back to the early days of speedrunning, when players began competing to complete levels as quickly as possible. As the community grew, players started to develop strategies and techniques to shave precious seconds off their completion times. The term “par time” emerged as a way to describe the theoretical minimum time required to complete a level, taking into account the game’s mechanics and level design.

just found a clearly AI generated article on a food blog? about par times in Doom that is not just wrong but brazenly confident while being incorrect

just typed 'handbrake' into the start menu, and instead of opening HandBrake, a frequently used program which is actually pinned to that very menu, it opened a window of Edge (a browser i never intentionally open) and searched for 'handbrake' in bing

latest unity hub version v3.17.1 is so broken it keep using almost 40% of CPU even while doing nothing at all. It's using more than the Editor itself. had to revert to an older version to get it working properly again.

Just found this sick website - tools.rmv.fyi

Lots of completely free tools - no logins, no registration, no data collection, just good ol' indie web! the way things were and can still be!!

One of them is a colourblindness sim as shown in the video, why not test out a pic of your game?
