I’m not 💯 sure about this answer, but I appreciate you.

In academia, the weird rivalry is unnecessary and odd. I spend my years telling kids who are writing novels that if a person is writing, they are a writer, no different to me. Yet some folks think that I’m still not a writer because I write for young people. The snobbery is so tired. 🥱

One of the silliest things about writing for young people is the shade authors get for it—as if it’s easier. This shows me that A. You don’t understand that this is where the big work is being done to help children build empathy and critical thinking, and B. You haven’t read the right books.

While I appreciate this suggestion, I am a woman traveling alone in an airport. I think you may not understand the dynamic.

But I’m writing it into my 2027 book now so maybe it can help?

Presently at a small airport. Young man is loudly making TikTok videos that offer travel tips in his selfie-aimed phone. None of the travel tips include not disrupting the peace at a small airport. Some of them are also inaccurate.

What a great book. Like hiking? Adventure? Disaster escapes? Volcanoes? Even if you don’t, this book will take you on a wild ride.

Trust me.

This copy came everywhere with me for three days as I read it in two states. Can’t wait to get it signed in June at USF MFAY’s first residency.

Teachers, this is a winner for earth science collaboration.
The descriptions of realistic volcanic activity are brilliant. Interspersed [fictional] USGS reports nail the structure. More tomorrow. 🕺

Did you ever have a book that was interrupted by life and then you carried the book everywhere because you wish you were reading it instead of doing anything else? Yeah. This book is so gripping, y’all.

If you haven’t read Pick the Lock yet, give yourself a breather and then dive in. It’s the bookend to this one. 🗝️

Still Life with Tornado “I am sixteen years old. I am a human being.” Actually…

Another YA not just written for kids bc of a lot going on with the parents. Bit of magical realism (manifestations of the main character at different ages show up and interact) makes all of this work. @as-king.bsky.social def delivers. 🔥

When my neighbors fight and the yelling comes through the walls, and it feels like the walls are bulging from the bad energy and it takes you back to when that was normal. And the dogs bark. And the dogs bark.

Cover of the book: Attack of the black rectangles. The cover depicts many censored crossed out words, only the title of the book is still readable. One of the censored words blocks a young kid's mouth from speaking.

Finished reading the book "Attack of the black squares" from @as-king.bsky.social . It's really good, and gave me food for thought. The book is especially relevant in the time we live in now.

I hope you think so. Because it’s coming.

The dad in that one is a real person. And the mug scene really happened. And the mother and son are safe now.

VERA has a lot of moving parts. Your worry is not unfounded.

Hi again! It's me with an another installment of the last book I ever thought would get banned--my picture book about a unicorn and kitty who are pals. A quick look at what this school district bizarrely found objectionable. 1/

ICE agents in Queens, New York break down a bedroom door and point guns at a mother & her four US citizen children

They dragged the mother out by her hair while yelling at the kids to “put your hands up, stupid!”

This is tyranny

These kids are traumatized

It was warrantless and no ID was shown.

@gregandree71.bsky.social — I saw this post today and laughed so hard at the “might be Satan” part.

Well, my health insurance just more than quadrupled. It’s more than my mortgage now. For one person. Must be nice to have taxpayers pay your top-notch health insurance for life while actively making decisions that hurt them. Y’all have no bottom.
