Finally, it is critical to understand that motorists are responsible for the vast majority of deaths on our roads. A Queensland where more people opt to cycle, scoot, wheel and walk instead of driving would undoubtably be a safer one.

The license requirement will exclude the many adults who do not or cannot hold a valid license, including people with certain disabilities, older people, visitors and residents from countries whose licenses are not recognised in Australia, and people who have had their driver’s license revoked.

For many, the purpose of the electronic assist on these devices is not to fulfill some need for speed, but to reduce the effort needed to navigate hilly terrain, tow a load of groceries, or ride their kids to school.

E-motorbikes look similar to dirt bikes but run on electric batteries. They do not require the user to pedal and can reach speeds of upwards of 50 km/hr. In contrast, pedelecs only provide an electric boost when the user is pedalling and will stop providing that boost if the bike exceeds 25 km/hr.

One issue with these recommendations and the surrounding debate is the failure to distinguish between various e-mobility devices. In particular, it is important to distinguish between e-motorbikes and legal e-bikes/pedelecs.

I wrote an OpEd for the GC Bulletin on the terrible e-mobility laws proposed by the QLD government. I focused on requirements for all e-mobility users to hold a drivers or learners license, but there are many issues with legislation.

Happy birthday to the Washington Metro, which opened 50 years ago today with service on 4.6 mi of Red Line between Rhode Is. Ave & Farragut N. System now serves 130 mi.

The DC Metro shows that, with good planning & enough investment, the public sector can succeed & build something extraordinary.

Over the last day I spoke with four local journos and drafted an op-ed about the awful e-mobility laws proposed by QLD Gov. Requiring anyone using an e-bike to have a drivers license makes no sense and will leave the many QLDers who can't or don't have a license stranded.
