In the UK we talk about “the corner shop,” as they were probably originally where 2 rows of houses intersected, making a corner house which was turned into a shop. So, is his “speech writer” a Brit? If so, apologies for that.

Ok. In the UK we vote in 650 constituencies for 1 MP each and the party with the majority of MPs take power, so still not the popular vote. I think the truth is that any system can fail. I don’t understand why the US states don’t have to automatically adopt the result of the election though.
I don’t understand your electoral college system. Do any other countries do it? What is the argument for it in the present day?
