Members of Rocketship, The Telephone Numbers, and Remedy & Wren after the show at Mississippi Studios, Portland, Oregon, April 17, 2026.
My favorite photo from Rocketship's West Coast tour celebrating the 30th anniversary of 'A Certain Smile, A Certain Sadness.' I took this after the Portland show at Mississippi Studios, just before the "Class of '26" parted ways. The Telephone Numbers and Remedy & Wren are the other bands featured.
A small, visible core supported by a much larger, largely invisible and interlocking periphery. The band on stage and the crowd in the room get remembered, photographed, occasionally written about. The rest fades into the background, even as it does the work of holding the whole thing together.
The collage is the merch.
The radio show is the gig.
The frequency is still alive.

The invisible work continues.
Each episode passes through an unseen aperture—hours of deep listening, and handmade collages built from vintage ephemera, cut and assembled by hand.
To keep the frequency alive, Nancy is offering 12 original collages to the first 12 people who donate $25 to XRAY.
A detailed collage of vintage ephemera, handmade by XRAY-FM DJ Gilliflower for the experimental music program Turtles Have Short Legs, includes a mix of antique postcards, stamps, illustrations of women, and text clippings from another era.
After two weeks on the road (and a broken foot) with Rocketship, DJ Gilliflower is back on the air at @xrayfm.bsky.social with Turtles Have Short Legs.
Whether she’s holding down a bassline or broadcasting into the quiet ether, the discipline remains the same: a steady, exploratory signal.
And the zine. Free. Not PWYW, because if you were there, you already paid. If not, here's the receipt anyway. hotelkilo.itch.io/the-rocketsh...
Names are mispronounced. Some dates and capacities are slightly off. One band name gets transposed. The machine cannot reliably say "Dusty Reske." The light of day gets refracted through multiple machine prisms, and the kaleidoscope turns and churns.

An AI-generated podcast summary of The Rocketship of Theseus, a zine published by The Grey Ledger Society about the West Coast leg of Rocketship's 2026 anniversary tour. The zine was fed to NotebookLM along with several web sources about the reissue. This is what came back.
Tonight’s watch, apropos of the recent announcement that New Order and Joy Division will be inducted into the 2026 Rock Hall, a 2024 doc about the origins of the Haçienda: www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ybF...
My friend Kyle Bruckmann (whose music features prominently in GUT INSTINCT) has released his new EP of electronic "breakfast music", and as I am taking the day off I'm listening while I drink coffee and it is a freaking delight. As gentle as he gets, still restless and playful and idiosyncratic.
I never get tired of seeing these in the wild!
That observation could have been made on any reissue moment, not just at a 30 year milepost. Dusty's Rocketship Of Theseus sails on still, playing Seattle this evening, and Portland tomorrow night. I've been tagging along, like Shepherd Book with Serenity, and a bizarre, singular magic persists.
"[Dusty Reske] has much in common with Kurt Heasley of Lilys, a Slumberland alum and musical itinerant. Like that band, none of Rocketship’s successive work revives the bizarre, singular magic of its debut. It’s an acquired taste for sure..."
As our dog might say, "That's a back paw compliment."

A tour diary of sorts as the “road hubby” for the bassist of Rocketship on their three date jaunt of California. The only drugs involved were NSAIDs, and there was fruit, vegetables, and hummus in the green room.
A few more from the road: Teragram Ballroom (Los Angeles), The Chapel (San Francisco), and The Starlet Room (Sacramento, with The Pharcyde playing downstairs at Harlow's).
A woman stands alone on a dim stage washed in deep blue light, wearing a therapeutic walking boot on her right leg, holding an electric bass and smiling slightly. A microphone stand and cables sit nearby, with a pedalboard on the floor. The scene feels quiet and spacious, with most details softened by the monochrome lighting.
A band performs on stage, viewed from behind and slightly to the side. A drummer sits on a raised platform at left while guitarists and a bassist face a packed audience under warm stage lights. Cables, pedals, and microphones are visible across the stage, creating a lively, immersive concert scene.
I was incredibly fortunate to have a unique POV of the Rocketship show at The Teragram Ballroom in Los Angeles a couple of days ago.
"Hot take" on e universal.
I wrote up a few tips for writing modules. I hope folks find it interesting! I might add to it over time.

For Brené Brown, the researcher who has made her name and career out of embracing empathy and vulnerability, the new Trump era of confrontational language and macho posturing is a source of personal sorrow.
But is it also bad for business? ft.trib.al/MtNsngA
Born to Be Waagh!
# KONNICHIWAAAGH! HIGH SCHOOL **A Brutal & Kunnin' RPG · One Page · One Die · Many Teef** --- ## YER ORK **Name:** Pick something like Gorzilla-chan, Dakka-senpai, Sneeki-kun, or Choppa-chan. **Uniform:** Skirt or trousers. There is no reason for this. Do not ask. **Number:** Choose from 2 to 5. This is your place on the BRUTAL ↔ KUNNIN' axis. > `2 DEAD BRUTAL · 3 BRUTAL · 4 KUNNIN' · 5 PROPER KUNNIN'` **Start with:** 3 Teef and one bit of gear (choppa, shoota, lunchbox-bomb, suspicious squig, etc.) **Club:** Pick one. You get +1 die (keep best) when acting in your club's style. | Club | Style | |------|-------| | Dakka Club | More shooting solves everything | | Speed Freeks | Outrun consequences | | Mek Workshop | Build something unstable | | Sneeki Gitz Society | If they saw you, you failed | | Choppa Club | Direct. Very direct. | --- ## DA ROLL When you do something **risky**, roll **1d6**. If it's just normal Ork behavior, it just happens — no roll needed. **Roll < your number → BRUTAL success.** Force, volume, presence. You win loud. Everyone sees it. **Gain +1 Teef.** **Roll > your number → KUNNIN' success.** Trickery, setup, timing. You win smart. **Gain advantage on your next roll OR steal 1 Teef quietly.** **Roll = your number → WAAAGH!!!** You succeed AND everything escalates. Contagious. Uncontrollable. **Gain +2 Teef**, then roll on the Waaagh table. **Failure:** If neither success type makes sense (GM call), you get krumped, embarrassed, or outmaneuvered. **Lose 1 Teef** or your situation gets worse. --- ## ORK VS ORK Both roll. Compare **type** first: Brutal beats Kunnin' in open confrontation. Kunnin' beats Brutal if the setup was established beforehand. WAAAGH beats everything but drags both parties (and probably bystanders) into chaos. Same type? Highest roll wins. Tied? It's a proper scrap — both lose 1 Teef and the scene gets worse.
## NPCs & OPPOSITION The GM rolls **1d6** for any NPC. Important NPCs (Headmistress, rival Boss) roll **2d6 keep best**. Compare results against the Ork's roll using the Ork vs Ork rules. *"Da Headmistress rolls two dice because she's DA BIGGEST."* --- ## TEEF Teef are money, status, and survival. At **0 Teef**, you're grot-tier: bullied, volunteered for terrible jobs, or "temporarily removed from school." **Spend Teef to:** - **1 Teef:** Small bribe, minor gear, avoid a single consequence - **2 Teef:** Recruit a grot helper, upgrade gear, reroll one die - **3 Teef:** Declare "Nah, dat didn't 'appen like dat" (retcon one event) --- ## WAAAGH!!! TABLE When someone rolls WAAAGH, roll d6: | d6 | WOT JUST 'APPENED | |----|---------------------| | 1 | A wall, floor, or ceiling stops being structural | | 2 | A rival club shows up and takes sides | | 3 | The Headmistress arrives personally. Everyone freezes. | | 4 | Someone's Mek project activates prematurely | | 5 | A squig gets loose. It's big. It's hungry. | | 6 | Full school WAAAGH. All scenes merge. Final bell early. | --- ## A DAY AT SCHOOL Play through **3–5 scenes**. The GM picks or rolls d6: | d6 | DA SCENE | |----|----------| | 1 | **Assembly.** Synchronized WAAAGH. Announcements via shouting. Attendance by headcount of survivors. | | 2 | **Class.** Applied Dakka, Kunnin' Tactics, Speed Studies, or Squig Biology. Group work = group combat. | | 3 | **Club time.** Inter-club rivalry is curriculum-adjacent. | | 4 | **Lunch.** Resource scramble. Food chain made visible. | | 5 | **Detention.** Targeted skill development via fighting someone bigger. | | 6 | **After school.** Boss fight, escalation, or reckoning. |

Well, I finally broke down and made hardcover versions of the Cairn 2e Warden's Guide. It looks pretty good! You can get it from Lulu right now, or you can wait for it to show up on DTRPG.

Set in a Nordic city that runs on time, just not always this year's time.
You work for the transit authority. Even as a passenger. Or as a dog on a tram.
Your job is to ride the line, observe, and file clean reports.
The system would prefer that you check the box anyway.

I'd be inclined to write that off as an April Fools joke, but considering the source?...
