Article from economist march 21st-27th noting:
Despite war in middle east running a car and driving historically cheap. Cost of fuel is 40% of pump price; fuel efficiency of UK cars has improved two thirds over past 3 decades. Cost of buying/maintaining lower than ever.
Of course, EV little impact

AND BIKE/PUBLIC TRANSPORT STILL BEATS EVERYTHING (<-my opinion)

Rayner flexes with plan to ramp up housebuilding The Labour MP has also urged Keir Starmer's administration to honour commitments on workers' rights, leasehold reform and immigration

Coverage in @theipaper.com of Rayner bigging up Community Land Trusts at the @coopparty.party.coop event, namechecking policy wins for our network with support from @matthewpennycookmp.bsky.social, but still too many barriers. inews.co.uk/news/rayner-...

The rent option has the attraction that tenants should have much lower energy bills in these homes, is there an estimate of the saving and so the net balance of cost?

Obviously personally I would have the govt spend much, much more on capital grant for new social housing!

Homebaked CLT also continues to be failed - the council has just agreed to sell the terrace next to HCLT's property off to a private developer, after the community spent years (frustrated by council indecision) finding a better way to repurpose the empty homes.

Lots of fantastic stories from CLTs and co-operatives in this new report, I'll be attending the launch with Angela Rayner this evening. The government has barely begun to grasp the potential of these models to back the builders in our communities.

On the bright side, we are working to set up a financing vehicle to bring forward 1,000 new rural social rent homes through CLTs. We've had positive discussions with the National Housing Bank, and need some first investors to get the show on the road.

Devon family stuck in cramped rental as waitlist grows A family hope a social home will offer more space and stability as rents and waitlists grow.

Calling @matthewpennycookmp.bsky.social when will we get the finance for the 1,000s of CLT homes stuck at the pre-development stage? This story from Devon powerfully tells the story of why this matters, how CLTs are helping & the opportunity the government is missing.

This is a pretty mad definition of corporate lobbyist. She works in public/stakeholder engagement for a worker co-op engineering firm.

Working in the think tank sector

Webinar for undergraduates or those with similar experience interested in working in the sector

Think tanks are research organisations that develop ideas and suggestions for action on a whole range of subjects affecting society. Using research, analysis and commentary, we aim to inform and influence politicians, policy makers and the public.

This event is aimed at people from Black, Asian and other minority ethnic groups, people with work-limiting health conditions or impairments, young adults with caring responsibilities (including young parents), mature students, people from lower-income backgrounds, care leavers and LGBT+ students.

Reading the court's findings on Palestine Action does leave me wondering why anyone who promotes peaceful non-violent direct action would want to support the group.

Great article. I'd particularly echo the points about core funding, longer-term grants, and funding ecosystems. We are lucky to have had some good funders in the UK doing this. The combination of the two enabled the CLT/CLH movement to make big strides in the last decade.

Reminds me of data the Heygate residents campaign unearthed finding that Met Police data indicated lower crime rates on the estate than the surrounding area. After years of people demonising the architecture as somehow being deterministically criminal.

Good to know there were no gangs before the postwar social housing estates were built!

Had it gone committee I'm v confident it would have been permitted, CLTs almost always get permission at committee because cllrs can exercise some common sense that somehow evades planning officers in the absence of clear rules-based permitting of quality intensification led by the local community.

I forgot that!

I was involved with a CLT trying to develop a small infill site offered up by the council. Post-SPD loss. Designs drawn up by local residents, lots of engagement, 100% affordable. Planners refused it on really minor design grounds and the inspector dismissed the appeal. Ridiculous.

I love this! I've often had the same thought about silly CGI of new developments. It's just missing the traffic jams.
