Mysterious Giant Blobs Of Material Near Earth's Core - Astrobiology In the 1980s, geophysicists made a startling discovery: two continent-sized blobs of unusual material were found deep near the center of the Earth

the craziest thing I've read all year is this theory that 2 "continents" that used to be on Theia are now buried deep under our feet

Started the day by realizing I’d accidentally deleted 500 words I wrote last week. But I just wrote 950 to make up for it.

My students are working on their final projects and one asked me how to steal from an existing game and get away with it. “Change the fantasy,” I said.

“But we want to keep it a horse racing game.”

Ok change the core mechanics & objectives. You level up your horse to be a lovable nag who loses.

The Popular Vote Interstate Compact gives the red states an incentive to pad their popular vote totals to swing the election.

The electoral college is unfair, but this is not a fix. All it does is create a new way to cheat.

Odd update here: The Trump-Jesus image the president posted (see QT below) appears to have been *altered* from the original, which looks to have been posted in February.

The original did not feature the demogorgan-ish thing in the sky.

I once tried to get a start-up to adopt "Go public and cash out" as our mission statement.

My suggestion was shot down by senior management in favor of the usual nonsense, but the workers all knew what our real mission was anyway ... .

20 years ago I hadn’t written The Aesthetic of Play yet, or invented Ludic Semiotics.

The only tools we had to discuss meaning-making in games were borrowed literary ones, which as you rightly observed were inadequate to address the physicality of playing a video game.

It’s so weird to see people going all-in with “the future of programming is the command line” when I lived through the switch to WYSIWYG editors in the 80’s and 90’s.

I’m expect punchcards to be the next new fad.

Back working on the novel.

Today’s challenge was figuring out how to have the main character pick up a small, insignificant object for a plot point 5 chapters later. It has to seem trivial, so the reader won’t expect the payoff.

But also memorable. So later you’ll be like “That’s what that was!?”

A heartening thing is realizing that when the big AI crash comes, the world will need a shit-ton of programmers to unwind the person-years of code debt that has accumulated during the vibe-coding fad. It’s going to dwarf the Y2K push.

In my work on play, I’ve always said “meaning is the residue of experience”. The meaning of a game is the strategies we develop to engage with it.

Learning a craft isn’t playful, but the process is the same. Struggling with the brambles of a thorny problem is how we learn. There is no cheat code.
