some of these apps are “free” but the true cost is obscured away from us behind badge notifications, silly sounds and a snappy UI. FOMO is baked into these apps. look at TikTok/Lemon8/Red Book. before TikTok was even “banned” people were already running to the next app 3/

the UI, the UX, the “usefulness” of the app were all secondary considerations that served the main goal: get users, and more importantly, keep users. our attention = more $$ for these corporations. 2/

in undergrad, I enrolled in an extracurricular boot camp for app development and the lead instructor told us with a straight face that our end goal as developers was to get users to come back to the app time and time again. 1/
