In my research to defend "2112" in the book, I was struck by how gracefully the band walked back the Ayn Rand thing over the decades. For a band that was on the brink (Lerxst was making mental plans to be a plumber with his dad) Rand's otherwise deeply flawed individualism saved their career in '76.
Its mystique makes up for the slightly wobbly side two. And c'mon, it was 1976, no need to apologize for its rockist tendencies. 😋
