Surprise tornadoes in Kansas yesterday. Constant forecast flip flopping in fall and winter. Subpar hurricane intensity forecasts in 2025. The Trump regime’s DOGE cuts have had a long lasting effect.
Tragicomic. Conservative @miamiherald.com editorial board member @maryannamancuso.bsky.social waits until *now* to have her Come to Jesus Moment. So many more like her. How many 💯s of thousands would still be alive today? How much damage could have been avoided? www.miamiherald.com/opinion/arti...
Obviously, the cost of climate inaction is increasing. So much so that it will soon exceed that of the cost of actions we should have taken such as carbon pricing. Also obviously, there's no stopping this in the short term. The pain in the pocketbook will worsen. uk.finance.yahoo.com/news/why-cli...
I don't doubt the Colorado State U forecast for total number of Atlantic storms in 2026, but I worry that more than just 2 will be major hurricanes. A greater proportion of tropical cyclones are reaching Category 4 & 5 intensity in this new era in which ocean heat content is deeper and warmer. 🌀

Takeaways: NHC track forecasts were good again in 2025, now led by AI modeling’s best guidance followed by consensus models. American (GFS) global modeling now about the worst on the planet. Intensity forecasts were not good amidst overall improvements in recent decades. nhc.noaa.gov/verification...

This is 9 months old, but all of it is still true.
More than ever.

A first for me today. Ground ops got us stuck in the mud at Syracuse Airport when the tow pushed too far back and the main gear dropped off the tarmac. Thanks to the @americanair.bsky.social gate agents for courteous service in getting me rerouted, even if I’ll get home over 9 hours late.

Good riddance.

“While the East was cold, for locations with long term records like NYC, DC, Philly & Boston, winter 2025-26 only ranked in the range of a top 25-50 coldest — it just seemed particularly brutal because of global warming and the trend toward milder winters in recent decades.” — @wxmanms1.bsky.social

Before that, we have to go back to December 1989 for the last time it was this cold (30°). Temperatures below freezing in the previous century also occurred in 1985, 1977, 1940, 1934, 1917, and 1905.
With a minimum temperature of 35 °F, today marks just the 2nd time this century that the temperature in Miami dipped so low. It was also 35° on 10 Jan 2010. This morning's lowest wind chill reading in #Miami was 26°
Number of days with low temperatures below 40 °F in #Miami during the last 50 years (1977-2026) is 4️⃣3️⃣ versus 9️⃣0️⃣ days in the previous 50 years (1927-1976). There's a good chance we'll add 2️⃣ such cold days this Sunday and Monday per @nws.noaa.gov.
