Hey gang! Are there any Melbourne/Victoria-based 3D modellers looking for short contract work right now? Summerfall is currently on the lookout for contractors to do hard-surface environment work for a new prototype, like furniture and all that. 🔨🪑

Send through portfolios! 🙂 Cheers!

"Let us make weird things," says the dev of this tactical reverse bullet hell, where I can't stop merging more explosive units Rami Ismail on tackling a unique blend of quickfire strategy with Australia Did It, coaching me through the "curiosity" at the heart of my hands-on

To kick off, this lovely write-up of both game and my general take on indie publishing in @gamesradarplus.bsky.social

We've been working on Parasensor since February 2023, when we submitted our application to the first Originate Games. And I first started spinning Ghoulish things up in 2021.
It only now feels like things are getting properly started...please pray for us....

Yes, or I'd at least yell to all around to submit something to it 😋

Been playing @farmrpg.com daily for the last 2 years or so. It's a really fun community and has real 'number go up' monkey brain energy (also a story too if you're into it)

Freeplay is one of Australia's most important creative festivals, so why is its future in doubt? | ScreenHub: Film, TV, Streaming and Games Freeplay, one of the Australia's longest-running game festivals, remains an essential platform for bold, creative, and compelling art.

my thoughts on @free-play.bsky.social and why it remains so, so important (especially in the bad times!!!!)

Screenshot of a Tweet from Katharine Neil that say "Conference banner on the wall at the first #freeplay20 in 2004. "Innovation in the Field of Excellence" was a dig at the bullshit corporate themes that the Australian Game Developers' Conference used to go with every year."

The photo is a banner with "Innovation in the field of excellence" crossed out and replaced with "Freedom and independence in game development!"

First and most importantly is to recognise its legacy. Freeplay was the longest-running independent games festival in the world. It was one of the first dedicates spaces for the countercultural and political side of gamemaking.

Ultimately, I hope Freeplay finds a way to return to and persist in its more ragtag low budget from, relying on the community that in turn gets so much from it to sustain it. Or people start new ragtag events in new dojos without a budget to make the new CEOS of the game industry feel uncomfortable.

I have thoughts on this, as a former director and a board member for six years, and for one time anyway, a keeper of the flame of Freeplay’s history. But first up I want to say how incredibly disappointing it is that Creative Vic hasn’t funded Freeplay.

Sifter’s annual list of every Australian made videogame is out. These are a crucial resource and I’m so glad they do it every year.

A comic titled Spooky Bird Stories. In panel 1, a turkey vulture is telling stories to other vultures, and it says, "She walked toward the source of the terrible smell. She got closer and closer, and then, to her horror, she saw... No dead body." A black vulture says "No!" and a turkey vulture says "Did someone already eat it??"
In panel 2, a northern cardinal is telling a story to some songbirds. It says "They peered through the windows of the house at the gory scene. Zombies had smashed through the door in the night. The homeowner was dead. But worst of all... He hadn't refilled the feeders." An eastern bluebird says "Aaah!" and an American goldfinch says "It can't be!".
In panel 3, a screech owl is telling a story to other owls. It says "And then the ghost fluffed itself up really big to appear scarier." A saw-whet owl gasps, and a long-eared owl says "Horrifying!".
In panel 4, a downy woodpecker is telling a story to other woodpeckers, and says "The eerie sound rang through the dark woods. Tap-tap. Tap-tap. It was the distinctive two-part knock of the Ivory-billed Woodpecker. The species had returned from the dead... FOR REVENGE." A red-cockaded woodpecker says "Yesss".

This conversation with Maddy and Noel about the making, speedrunning & impact of Celeste was an absolute delight - one of the most interesting conversations about game dev, with genuinely two of the nicest people I've ever met. I'm going to be thinking about this one for ages ❤️
