My brain refuses to accept just how BIG elephant seals are, with male southern elephant seals (Mirounga leonina) reaching 4,000 kg (8,000 lbs).
They also, apparently, have strong views on internal combustion engines.
But I want to talk about how they dive WHILE SLEEPING.

My first thought as well but on reflection maybe this is partly "leaders know what they're doing" or similarly "if it's happening there's a plan."

Toll-like receptors, shear-sensitive triggering and edibility. I freaking love biology.

Wow!
OK so you're going to hoover up a cell and harness its metabolic innovations as a mitochondria. Then develop specialized subcellular structures. Once that's dialed whittle cells back to a small size - but with option on largest organism ever - then WORLD DOMINATION.
Can confirm.
America: really going through some things.
Relatedly. Why a Civil War before recognizing - sorta kinda - basic humanity? Or a Depression before a New Deal? feels like we could just decide to have nice things directly.
Witness the elegance of the swimming Feather Star, a crinoid that dates back to the Ordovician era, over 480 million years ago. A true marvel of evolution in our oceans.
Aside from the jaw-dropping skill of camouflage on display here, I love how the octopus just keeps trying things, apparently hoping the weird bright light goes away.
Cloning in sci fi always promises endless iterations of you, like a Xerox machine for people.
But an important aspect of mammalian somatic cell cloning is those adult cells often no longer have the 'consensus genomes' of the fetal cells they came from.
Each cell in your body accumulates mutations.
Wow!
This is...really good. Continuing to appreciate your work @zohrankmamdani.bsky.social @mayor.nyc.gov

So good.
Aw man I forgot about that and oh my have some things happened since then.
Like rivers for supplies instead of water, except the powers that made them added proprietary stamp forcing stop and transfer if you want to keep going. Neat (and also purposely awful for future generations).
Cool way to look at geography and history. Thanks @cthomasjamh.bsky.social for sharing.
I deeply love science (and the curiosity that drives it).
These nature photographs via @theguardian.com are spectacular. Enjoy :-)

We will make me think about banks and telecommunications companies. One way to get big and is by harvesting nibbles at massive scale.
<chef's kiss>
This is like, I dunno, science fiction l. Except without the fiction.
@straightarrownews.bsky.social Thank you! (If this is the same outfit)
This is how I love to see the internet used.

Let's learn some surprising things about hummingbird tongues.
First, as you can see, their tongues are forked & feathery, highly specialized for lapping up their liquid diet of nectar.
But it gets weirder up close!
*many
Noticing that the first tongue probe was long, with remainder shorter. Guessing it's more efficient to move smaller amount of mass less distance more quickly? (ofc I haven't read the paper yet).
Also, may kudos for citing primary literature. Big fan.
