Or they could have not done that. DOOM 2016 tells a more simple story about fracking. How corporate greed leads to environmental ruin while those responsible spin out justifications.
It worked! But like many franchises, Doom Eternal seems to primarily be about how good they think Doom is. Which, ok

Wolfenstein is a game where BJ questions how god could possibly exist in a world that allows the holocaust to happen. If you want to seriously look at how a man empowered by the divine to fight demons, in the face of apocalypse, curses the god that brings damnation, you can
(I love Dean Winchester)
The problem with Doom Eternal is not that they wanted to add a lot of lore or make it a sequel to Doom 1 & 2 with you literally being the character.
Wolfenstein did both those things, but has character and theme that it's weaved around. Doom Eternal just boy, here's a codex about our fantasy city.
No Squirrel emoji but there is a "Chipmunk" emoji is clearly a sign of American cultural imperialism.
🐿 should be a red squirrel. But no, now how do I celebrate my cat? A cat emoji? Don't be ridiculous.
To be honest, I would much rather fetch Pokémon creatures than a crummy pail of water.
I respect whoever decided that Final Destination (2000) should have a character driving by listening to Into The Void by Nine Inch Nails right as Trent Reznor says "pictures in my head of the final destination."
"Hey, that's the name of our movie!"
Prominent NIN and John Denver songs? Rileybait.
A funny disconnect is how Doom 2016 (and Doom 1993) is happy to just go these guys are demons from hell. Actual demons, real hell.
But Doom Eternal is like well these are Maykrs (it's like makers, get it) from... Urdak instead of just saying angels from heaven, which is what they are anyway.
Look, I know some people aren't too eager to follow Kindly Miquella just because they want to steal everyone's hearts forever.
But don't worry, you'll feel differently about that once they steal everyone's hearts forever.
Doom 2016 makes me think I'd have more respect for ceos if they were 3 meter tall full body conversion cyborgs.
But that's probably just my inherent reverence for 3 meter tall full body conversion cyborgs.
It was Eric Williams
“The British historians wrote almost as if Britain had introduced Negro slavery solely for the satisfaction of abolishing it."
If I ever tell you I'm gonna start Icewind Dale 2 because I've not really played it I need you to promise me, promise me, that you'll remind me I haven't played Temple of Elemental Evil and to play that first.
This might not seem important now, but I assure you it will be.
I'm not saying that like "A foundry" is breaking serious ground for video game environment, but Doom 3 felt like the same hallway over and over until 8 hours in when I was finally allowed go to hell.
Doom 2016 rocks and I'm glad that the earlier version of Doom 4 which got nicknamed "Call of Doom" got shelved because like, yeah circa-2011 Doom military shooter is something the world is alright without.
Contrasting 3, it's such a visual treat compared to just the same tech corridor over and over
One of my friends works on Hitman and got to meet Mads Mikkelsen when he was in Hitman. Neat!
Nobody thought of putting Mads Mikkelsen in a game until he came along. Really innovative in his field.
Lights flickering wildly until I just turned shadows off my the big go to Torque 3D weirdness for me.
Well for Teron that you start in, Feng sees it as his turf and doesn't want competition, taking extreme actions to deal with any that exists.
But yes, totally could have had them as a more organised guild structure instead of the free for all competition it is.
Actually I think not being able to find a job in your field after finishing education and just kinda having to bum about, taking what you can makes the Loremaster background fit even *more* in the wrold
...also I kinda just assumed it was a practicality consideration. There's so many factions as is
Never let me into your Forgotten Realms campaign, I will play a Paladin in the Order of St. Kaelyn.
Or do! Just be prepared for me to reference Mask of the Betrayer a lot.
It's been one of those weeks. Pass the Tyranny!
People must play Vince games. Warlockracy is the strongest warrior in this, but even the greatest generals need people to carry forward the fight.
Me if Ken Levine's Judas sucks: If you want a good game with this premise, play Colony Ship.
Me if Ken Levine's Judas is good: If you want another game like that, you should check out Colony Ship.
Me if Ken Levine's Judas is cancelled: Shame. But if you want to play a game about a colony ship...
Other people discovering Lilura1 (her companions guide for Dungeon Rats was very helpful couple months ago) and liking her is great for me.
Because I aim to stay alive and continue to perpetuate grognardy crpg opinions on everyone who ever follows, talks to or shares a forum with me even as I age.
Gambit from The X-Men taking a cardboard box from his jacket saying "Well, I done had a think about dat. Marcus' little girl Chelsea? She got a whole murder of dem cards with little cartoon momsters on 'em." From Uncanny X-Men (2024) #5.
Oh my god how did I never consider Gambit could throw Pokémon or Yu-Gi-Oh cards before.
Thinking about a guy in secondary school who called Fallout 3 "the first one" in a conversation about the series.
Fucking absurd statement. There's a 3 in the title.
Anyway, I watched Final Destination Bloodlines the other night. I liked it.
(If you are going to cite Final Destination 2:
I am aware that the characters are able to get off the immediate hit list, but the end shows the characters as being acutely aware how even if this is the case, death is an ever present force in our world to which to all fall to.
Like the audience!)
Sure, the characters have tactics they can use to try and delay things. But ultimately you are going to die, maybe others will first, maybe you can avoid it for a bit, but being constantly aware of it fucks you up and no relief is given.
Yeah man! Mortality's my biggest fear, do be like that.
One of the earliest horror films I remember loving was Final Destination. Obviously got creative kills, suspense, etc.
But core premise, slasher where the killer is the abstract concept of death, through no fault of your own is coming, that you can't avoid or protect yourself from, did speak to me.
Never considered how the document I keep track of games I played and what I think of them would look when you called Doom (2016) "Doom" did you Bethesda? Had to make it slightly worse but still really obvious what game I am talking about.
As if people couldn't cope with a game being called Doom 4.
