My Irish grandfather would recite poetry taught to him by my Scottish grandmother. The poem was usually by Robbie Burns, the Ploughman poet. Man Was Made to Mourn, or at least part of it, seems relevant 242 years after the poem was written.

Alberta libraries, staff, city councillors denounce Dan Williams’ book censorship scheme - Alberta Politics If Alberta Municipal Affairs Minister Dan Williams’ scheme to ban books in public libraries is intended as way to distract voters from the deluge of uncomplimentary Globe and Mail stories about the United Conservative Government’s metastasizing dodgy health care contracts scandal, he might want to pick another distraction.  Public libraries are among the most beloved […]

The Canadian province that claims to value individual freedoms does not want individuals free to decide what they will read. Those in power, determined to maintain their authority, generally support book banning. albertapolitics.ca/2026/04/albe...

Americans and Israelis justify killing innocent Iranian citizens because Iranian rulers killed innocent Iranians. The military-industrial complex, which thrives on daily warfare expenditures in the billions, designed this response, not diplomats or peacekeepers. The MIC abhors peace.

USA’s military-industrial complex is a durable and entrenched system of aligned economic and governmental interests. With the national defence budget exceeding a trillion dollars in 2026, it must be the most successful political and economic structure ever constructed.

Belligerent and erratic On March 21, Donald Trump threatened to obliterate parts of Iran if the Strait of Hormuz was not fully opened within 48 hours. Hours before that deadline, Trump delayed the bombing threat by three days because 'productive' talks were ongoing with Iran. He later extended the deadline to April 6, saying negotiations were going very well. On April 5, Trump made a profane announcement, threatening massive bombing on April 7 if the strait remained closed. The American president promised a 'whole civilization will die.' However, cooler heads in the USA and mediative efforts by Pakistan led Trump to postpone the bombing once again, this time for two weeks.

3. And to be clear, not all change in cities is beneficial, and of course everyone always thinks the change THEY oppose is an example of that!

But our cities DO need substantial change to address the many challenges and crises we’re facing, & we frankly need to be MUCH better at communicating that!
