You might find it helpful to look at The Manuscript Academy website. They have live events with agents where you can ask those exact questions. Lots of online seminars and trainings. Good resource :). You might also find the podcast The Shit No One Tells You About Writing helpful (hosted by agents!)

I was just listening to an episode of The First Draft Club podcast where the author who creates it talks about when critiques are destructive. What you went through makes me think of that. Great podcast!
Wasn't it fun? Red shirts was also good, if you're a Scalzi fan! Dungeon Crawler Carl also had a great talking cat named "Princess Donut." I'm not a gamer, but I totally enjoyed that book. The cat reminded me of Hera from Starter Villain :)
