A week ago I found out that the grant I was confident would fund our spring mural will not, bc we're 2 blocks too deep into Kensington. This STINKS.
This project rocks bc it's community driven, biodiversity-focused (& more! read on!)
We're raising money to make it happen

My department at CSU Northridge is hiring a vertebrate functional morphologist! We've got a great EEB group, and we're looking for someone to carry forward a tradition of enriching organismal courses and community-engaged research. App review starts March 15

The number of projects that we can fund depends on donations! We're starting the pool with $3k from our 2025 surplus (thank you for buying eel facts advent calendars!!!).
If last year is any indication, we're gonna get requests for a LOT more than $3k

It’s been a year since we launched the science IRL mini-grant program.
Wanna see what our grantees got up to??
Check it out!

We’ll be doing this program again in 2026, keep an eye out for the announcement soon!
Last year we were able to give out $8500 thanks to donors who supported this program.
This year we’re starting at a baseline of $3000 (from advent calendar sales). Anything additional raised on this page will go directly to supporting more 2026 projects!

The greatest accomplishment of my 3rd chapter is that the shark skin I siliconed onto my flapping robot did not fly off into the depths of the flow tank 🫡

Is it really SICB if your not making edits to your talk the night before???
Anyway, come see my talk tomorrow at 11 am! It’s got sharks and Frankenstein and you may not think those two things to together, but I promise they do.
Collective #behavior, observed across a wide range of species, offers a rich resource for cross-disciplinary study, linking biology, physics, and #engineering. This symposium will explore the #metabolic benefits and #biomechanical mechanisms of collective movement across different species and scales, highlighting the use of cutting-edge technologies such as computer vision, metabolic #phenotyping, and autonomous swarm #robotics. By uniting researchers from diverse fields and divisions, we aim to uncover unifying principles of collective behavior and discuss its broader implications, from energy savings in animal groups to applications in autonomous systems.

At @skypeascientist.bsky.social we were able to give out more grant funding than we took in this year, thanks to people who support us!
That grant funding went to 13 science communicators across the country on their in-person projects.
