Presumably the city has a private database somewhere? Or they just don’t even keep track…?

Wow
I think expense is definitely a part of it. But it also seems like most architects aesthetically prefer modernism… to me it seems like they all go to modern art school and are trained to make modern art… someone educate me if I’m wrong!
People would definitely prefer this. And it’s not classism, it’s just modern buildings are ugly.
The Complete Land Use Map of Los Angeles
(remember, this is current land use, NOT zoning)
I can't upload the full resolution here, so I'll post some zoomed-in details below:
Seems denser than the inner Bay Area (other than sf).
Would love to see the bay map!
Serious adu there 💪
the opportunity costs of car ownership are *massive*
if you invested the ~$1k/mo average cost of car ownership - over 20 years, you'll have $460k at 6% interest, v. wasting $240k on car ownership.
that's a swing of $700k folks.
e-bikes are an *incredible* investment.
satellite view of an 8-lane street and a Chick-fil-A with 10+ cars in the drive-thru in San Diego
San Diego, the US city with the best year-round walkability weather
But what a difference the lighting makes!
Ok this is kinda cool
UC Berkeley paper on the effects of the new fast food worker sectoral bargaining board in California.
8-9% wage increase
1.5% price increase
No impacts on sector employment
Growth in sector restaurants

At least they’re a lot smaller than what we have in America 🙃 where the car is coddled with spacious living quarters.
An urban intersection with zero daylighting
Another such intersection with a parking square in the background
What looks like it would otherwise be a nice park entirely covering by parking
Urbanism of Thessaloniki ✨
Somewhat fascinating to see people here are not just completely giving up on walkability and accessibility, they're also pretty much giving up on parks by dedicating large squares in dense residential neighborhoods (with good transit!) entirely to parking
Not my style but glad it was built. The blue panels are nice tones though so that’s good.
This is an interesting angle for the police Chase or not to Chase debate going on in Oakland right now.
My (limited) experience biking in midtown’s on the weekends has been relatively chill. Agree it needs major improvements. But I’d say it’s more chill than Oakland. Not too many cars there on weekends.
Also it’s a grid of mostly 2-3 lane one ways streets which helps it feel like a freeway.
Segregated BRT seems like a pretty good candidate for self driving bus- basically a self driving train on tires- atho not fully grade separated.
Yes but now the republicans are terrified to touch it…
Communist parties had some electoral success in Europe (and India?). Also there’s a couple elected city council members throughout the US that maybe are communist. Of course there’s Bernie sanders but he’s a social democrat.
Our winner take all single member electoral system is important. But ya…
Insane
Places with expensive housing also have lots of small businesses, but I do think Sacramento has some charm that the Bay Area lacks.
The 2 or 3 lane one way streets don’t help either…
They’re also a bit slimmer than a lot of the stuff through Oakland so that helps.
If driving is so freeing and convenient, why is every driver one nanosecond away from total rage meltdown?
I agree helmets in general are good. It also depends a lot on the setting. When you are riding casually in a flat area, never going more than 10 mph, like most people in netherland do, helmets feel less needed. If you’re riding fast down a hill sketch even without cars.
Ya this was obviously scripted, it’s pretty funny how much of a contradiction it is with his. I guess they’ve never thought about traffic before!
