A year after racist riots erupted across England and Northern Ireland following the murder of Bebe King (aged 6), Elsie Dot Stancombe (aged 7) and Alice da Silva Aguiar (aged 9) in Southport, Amnesty International has found that social media platform X played a central role in the spread of false narratives and content which incited violence against Muslim and migrant communities.

Our analysis of X’s open-source code reveals that the platform’s content ranking algorithms prioritise the type of content that can spread misinformation and hate, with deeply inadequate safeguards to prevent human rights abuses.

“Our research demonstrates that these design choices significantly exacerbated human rights risks for racialised communities in the wake of the Southport riots– and continues to present a serious human rights risk today,” said Pat de Brún, Amnesty International’s Head of Big Tech Accountability.

Islamophobic and xenophobic rhetoric on X after Southport Attack

Within hours of the murder of the three young girls and attempted murder of ten others by 17-year-old Axel Rudakubana, incendiary posts by far-right influencers went viral on X. Within 24 hours, posts falsely claiming the attacker was Muslim, a refugee and/or a migrant who had arrived by boat reached an estimated 27 million impressions.

Our analysis of the recommender system and the removal of safeguards at X demonstrate that it is set up to amplify this type of harmful content and that there are few safeguards to prevent it. The net result was a staggering amplification of hate speech and anti-migrant sentiment. Andrew Tate, a notorious online influencer, posted a video falsely claiming the attacker was an “undocumented migrant” who “arrived on a boat” whilst Elon Musk claimed that “civil war is inevitable”.

Stephen Yaxley-Lennon’s (also known as Tommy Robinson’s) posts on X, including claims such as there being “more evidence to suggest Islam is a mental health issue rather than a religion of peace”…

The mutual support between women business owners is inspiring. Akilah Releford-Gould received a lovely gift from Meghan Sussex and is reciprocating with a harvest basket of her handmade goods. This is a wonderful example of their support for each other.

Before With Love, Meghan, I was intimidated and never would have attempted it. But Meghan Sussex inspired me to give it a try — and here we are: I’m making homemade focaccia bread!

Before asserting that something like this is happening because he says he can do it, journalists should ask what the statutory authority is, and if it is unclear or nonexistent, the headline and story should reflect that.

Important always to remember that the people spearheading the hatred of “mass immigration” think that the ideal number of non-white immigrants in the country is zero.

These people are so fcking wealthy, and have been for so long, they honestly are ok with the world burning down as long as they + their people are good. The ability to shift global consciousness and behavior has to be a helluva drug.

I hope everyone is clear that we're going beyond "fake news" "alternative facts" and "misinformation" into full blown state-sponsored propaganda.

And we're fcked, bc way too many Americans still don't realize we've been frogs in pots for a solid decade now.

To cut a long story short, the richest man in the world has recognised that representative democracies are, at this point, an impediment to his further accrual of wealth and power, and so is acting directly against those democracies. His peer group is following suit.

The real story is that 2 weeks before Trump retakes office, the most wealthy/powerful people on earth have decided to *publicly* embrace him because they have calculated that being in his good graces will help them more than any public backlash to *openly* joining his fascist movement will hurt.

Blake Lively, Justin Baldoni and a Smear Campaign After ‘It Ends With Us’ Private messages detail an alleged campaign to tarnish Blake Lively after she accused Justin Baldoni of misconduct on the set of “It Ends With Us.”

Struggling to find the words for just how disturbing this is.

But suffice it to say that at one point, even Baldoni’s own publicist essentially says “thank goodness people hate women.” nyti.ms/3DoqZSq
